Anyone been to Thailand?

Pheonix, 27 July, 2011 at 12:44 Posted on Planning 0 1

We're off to Thailand on our honeymoon (two weeks on monday!!) and I'm struggling with how to take money. When I looked at pre pay cards you can't get extra money off easily and there's still a fee... we thought about taking half credit card and half cash (thinking about taking 2-2500 for 16 days) but im worried we'd pay through the nose. None of our credit cards are patricuarly cheap to use abroad (Natwest, Tesco, Barclaycard) and I don't know what to do for the best I'm not sure about taking all cash...

So I have a few questions -

How did you take money with you? and how much did you take approximately (we're planning on doing a fair bit of diving so ive upped the amount)

Also, what plug adapter do I need for there... I'm struggling to be sure,

Any help would be awesome!

We took cash and just rationed ourselves on a daily basis, and then split the cash between us, locking the rest away in the hotel safe. It's best to ask for small denominations seeing as everything is sooooo cheap. Most shops won't be able to change say a 100 baht note.

Dunno where you live but we can recommend Thomas Exchange Global, based on the Strand (recommended on Money saving Expert as having the best exchange rates). They no commision, best rates and they can post to you, I think for £5 if you can't get into London.

Sorry can't remember what plug we had!

CHeck your bank as i can widthdraw cash in foregn countrys with out a charge and only paying their currency rates (which are average.)

I would get some money in the currency you need and take the rest sterling as the rate out there tends (i say tends as i have always found this but i cant speak for every country) to be better.

Split it in to small sections - some in your suitcase, split it between you both etc... and keep some on a card for emergancies. travellor cheques are not as useful as they use to be.

Plug adaptor go in to boots there are only a few types around and you can find one for asia(should be labeled on the side which countries its good for). - just take 3 or 4 with you as you will be surprised what electrical items you will take with you.
