Anyone crafty??

Emma158, 22 April, 2013 at 17:31 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi,

I'm decorating jam jars with a mixture of lace, hessian, and ribbon to hold tealights and flowers and have used glue dots to attach the material. It looked good at first but some of it has started to come unstuck so I was wondering if anybody could suggest what sort of glue would be best to use?

Thanks

Emma

Copydex is great with fabrics, but not sure whether it dries white or clear. It does smell fishy, but not after it's dried. You can get some stuff that is designed for hemming up trousers don't know if that'd be any good? You can get them dots by Bostik in extra strong too from Ryman.

Am I correct, you are attaching material/hessian/flowers etc directly onto the glass jars?

Ensure the jars are thoroughly washed & dry before you start- any bit of oil, incl oil from fingers, will affect the stick.

I'd just use a PVA craft glue that dries clear. You can get this at poundland, asda, hobbycraft etc. You can either dab it on directly using the nozzle for larger areas. For finer things like flowers/diamantes etc, I squirt some glue onto a plate or plastic take-away lid, & use a toothpick or skewer to get a small amount of glue, then dab on the back of the flower. This method is messier than glue dots, but would ensure amore accurate application.

I used glue dots for my invites & had to go over EVERY one as the dots became unstuck after a few days.

I used glue dots on my save the dates and every single one needed a re-do, really annoying. Like Teal said I then used pva glue (goes on white but dries clear) 99p from Wilkos and it stuck everything solidly, the ribbon, the lace and even the charms. Just test a little section first to make sure it doesn't affect the materials, I over blobbed a bit because I wasn't very delicate and some of my ribbon ended up looking a bit crusty but the rest turned out okay.

You need to find a glue that will adhere to glass. A 2 part epoxy will work but is pricey. Copydex works on fabrics but won't on glass - it'll just peel off. PVA would be better but because it's a slow drying glue you'll need to hold the parts in place for a while or they'll just start slipping off. Glue gun can be quite messy so if you choose this option, keep tooth picks and kitchen roll close by to keep the loooong stray bits under control.

I suggest 'Glu & Fix' Extra strong. Comes in a small purple and white tube and works on glass, metal, wood, ceramics and fabrics. It was £1 in ASDA last time I looked. You only need a small dot of glue and it's a permanent bond. I'm an artist and crafter so have experimented with different loads of different kinds of adhesives before Smiley smile
