Anyone doing Ramsay's cookalong tonight?

Katchoo, 24 October, 2008 at 17:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

H is insisting he wants to do the cookalong tonight. He has bought all the ingredients (bar rhubarb - there appears to be no rhubarb in the whole of Norf London so we're having to go with tinned, unfortunately).

We have no TV in the kitchen or dining room, and there doesn't appear to be an internet simulcast, so I am going to have to relay instructions from the sitting room. ?

Anyone else?

No, my reason was that I have to t.v in the kitchen, but that looks rubbish now!

What else is it this year?

I'll watch a bit of it and hopefully it's improved as last year's menu was waaaaay to expensive and he cooked so quickly that anyone who wasn't at least a bit competent couldn't have kept up. Lets not mention the shaky camera work. ?

Tell me about it. H spent £30 on it last night! I grumbled that I could get a bloody good curry for that.

It had better be worth it. H is a very good cook, so hopefully he'll be able to keep up. I'm not happy I've got to wait until after 9pm for my dinner though. ?

well but he himself went off on one not long ago about seasonality. i believe he slagged off loads of restaurants for serving non seasonal food. here is a bit from the channel 4 website itself http://www.channel4.com/food/features/interviews/ramsay-interview-seasonal_p_1.html

and asking people to go out and buy an ingredient that is months out of season isn't a great idea in my opinion, it won't taste as good but also it'll be pricey if you can find it and imported.

    rant over ?

We're doing it with friends tomorrow night thanks to the wonder of Sky+. You can't pause too much otherwise your cooking times get messed up, but sometimes it's useful to be able to rewind if you miss what he said! Mind you we'll do it in shifts (like we did last time) so one couple in the kitchen and one watching the TV very carefully, then switch.

It's really limited to the layout of your house though - my mum wouldn't be able to do it as she can't see the TV from her work surfaces and only just from her cooker.

I've just watched the end of it and think I would sky+ it as it ooked rather fast. When do you find out what ingredients you need to buy as I fancy the lasagne he is doing next week?

Phew - we did it! I ended up getting roped in because it was waaay too fast for one. We did have to pause Sky+ a couple of times and rewind because he wasn't clear on a lot of stuff (at one point he said put the sugar in the pan - but there were 2 sugars on the ingredients list, and he didn't specify).

Only disaster was when H cremated the sugar while caramelising it, so we had to pause it while I washed the pan and started again.

It was really nice, but I couldn't eat it all. Way more food than I would normally cook myself. I would have everything again, but probably not together. The tinned rhubarb worked okay in the end, but I would only make it again with fresh.

Glad it went well, was thinking of you, I couldn't keep up, I was watching it upstairs in bed and was relieved when the ad breaks arrived meaning my brain could process what had flashed before my eyes previously.

I did not like PK though - was it just me or did she try and turn it into the PK cooking show??

    and for the mask....
