Anyone else a coldsore sufferer?

Vikster79, 3 January, 2011 at 10:28 Posted on Planning 0 18

☹️ I bloody hate them and am really concerned that i will wake up the morning before the wedding with a huge great blister on my lip and not be able to get rid of it. I can go weeks or months sometimes without one but i have woken up with my second in a week!!(the other one has gone so no cross contamination). Anyone know how i can prevent a breakout. I know its a virus stuck in my system but perhaps there may be some tried and tested remedies lurking around some of you lovely ladies.

Thank you ?

You could obsessively apply Zovirax for the week beforehand to head it off at the pass?

Hi Vikster, i'm living with the same dread.

I suffer with cold sores but my poor son suffers way worse than me (he has had blood tests to see if there was an underlying cause because he gets such bad outbreaks).

We were told by another fellow suffer to try some tabs which you can get from Holland & Barrett. They are called L-Lysine 500mg, they are an amino acid so nothing dangerous.

Totally totally tried and tested on my son, he's only 11 so for the past 3 years we have been crushing 1 a day into his yoghurt , ? the only times he has had cold sores is when I have stopped giving them to him.

I will certainly start taking them a few months before my big day.

    Bev xx

Oh Vikster that sucks! Unfortunately I think one of the big things that causes outbreaks is stress, that is definitely the case with me anyway! So firstly an excuse to relax and pamper yourself in the run up to the wedding! If you're really worried, you could have a chat with your GP, I think they can prescribe a low dosage of aciclovir which could help keep it at bay ?

I suffer from cold sores a lot. Mostly on my nose, which is a weird place to get them I know lol. Then when I met my H2B he gets them on his lips which I then started getting on my lips tooSmiley sad I too can go months without them but as soon as I feel run down I get 2 sometimes 3 in a row. I feel awful and ugly and just want to hide away from the world!! Anyway, I did a little bit of research online and came across information about lysine which is supposed to prevent coldsores. You can buy it in tablet form from holland and barretts and also in lip balm form . And so far it's been really good for me. I haven't even been taking it religouslu as ur supposed to cause I'm really lazy at these kind of things hate taking pills!!!! Usually the run up to Christmas and January are the worst months for me. I don't want to jinx it but so far so good!! ( be warned though the pills are huge) I hope this helps!

Ive never used this but a friend swears by it. If your a long term sufferer then she high ly recommends it. It IS expensive but you can get it in *own* brands so you can pick it up about half the price, try boots too.

Trickers i do remember yes. If it was 10 days before (fingers crossed that doesnt actually happen) it would be ok as they tend to stay with me for around 5-7 days but still i really really dont want one. Im going to give some remedies a go and failing that go see the quack. Blinkin bloody horrible things ?

Hi ladies, I am a sufferer too! Yes, they can come from no-where.

I know why you wouldn't want one, they are really unsightly and they hurt.

I carry zovirax with me wherever I go and if I think I may be getting one I apply loads. This works most of the time...

I think I may apply it everyday from 2 weeks before the wedding as a preventative measure, I know the zovirax works if it is applied in time (it is not always possible to do this).

L lysine may work but go for a high dose, more than 1000 mg per day. Remember, L lysine (there are other variants of lysine). But realistically, if you don't have any adverse reactions to acyclovir group products, I'd stick to this clincially-proven pharmaceutical route. You can get tablets from your doctor (6 month course at a time) or rub the cream in as a preventative. UV radiation activates the herpes virus so avoid bright sunshine without a good UV sunscreen.

    Hi,

It's not that widely known but you can actually get a tablet form of the zovirax cream which is an antibiotic called Aclovir. It is only avaliable on prescription though and you'd have to have a kind doctor to prescribe it!

Because of my job it's important I don't get coldsores, so I went to the doctors and explained the situation and she prescribed my Aclovir. If you take the tablets as soon as you feel the tingle it doesn't even appear. Unfortunately many doctors won't prescribe it as a) its expensive and b) the side effects can be a bit icky - nausea etc (although I've always been fine) Obv I don't condone taking anti biotics willy nilly but if you are really prone to them it might be worth seeing the doctor to get a one of course prescribed just incase.

My doctor admitted herself that the creams basically don't work as the virus is in your bloodstream and so although the cream may stop the blister getting bigger it won't stop a coldsore appearing or make it go quicker. As a long term sufferer of cold sores all the over the counter stuff I've ever used is pants but the anti biotics really work.

Aclovir is a preparation of acyclovir so isn't an antibiotic, it's an antiviral. Take it as willy-nilly as you like!

I get these and it's one of the things I'm worried about too. I'm just gonna plaster my lips in Zovirax for the couple of weeks prior to it so if my body is tempted to break out in one then hopefully it'll put a stop to it before it even has chance!

I am a terrible sufferer too! I get them everywhere, lips, nose, ears, cheeks, eyelids and would you believe even on my bum cheek when I went skiing and sat in the cold too long!! I pretty much has one every two weeks which would then spread and now I take the aciclivoir tabs once a day. The only time I've had one is when I went to Thailand and the sun was too much. I'm hoping these will keep them away!!

Oh I also meant to say coldsores can also be caused by eating too much acidic food so stay away from the orange juice etc close to the wedding!
