So sat I went with my mom and daughter to look and try on some wedding dresses. First shop I went in were fantastic. Made me feel amazing with no pressure to buy. Helped me into a stunning dress and answered any questions asked.

However, the second shop I went to were totally the opposite. They actually said they didnt think they had many dresses that would fit me as im a bigger girl and it soesnt help that Im big chested!!!!!!

Im a size 12/14 and do not think this is big at all. They tried to help me into a dress that was made for like a size zero. Struggled to get it on then they tried everything to get me to buy it!! Saying that they have to get it copied by their dressmake in FLORIDA??? As they need a much bigger size.

Pointless post really. Just ranting and letting out a few tears. I know im not the skinniest girl in the world but I have never been made to feel like the size of a house. So upset and now im scared to go dress shopping anymore incase im made to feel like it in other shops too.

However, I will not be recommending secong shop to anybody!!

I would complain usually, however it was the dressmaker and the manager making these comments. They were doing everything to get me to stay there and buy a dress that they more or less said I was too fat to get into. Even going so far as to getting another brides dress which had been measured for altering. Taking out pins and trying to get me to try it on.

This was a bit too far for me.I wouldnt try on another brides dress. I ended up being there and extra 30 minutes more than I wanted to be due to them messing about and I ended up with a bloody £50 parking fine!!!! Not a good day for me x

Ive only been in 3 shops and by myself (just for browsing) but im surprised all the dresses ive come across (especially in the sales where 12+)

I think my most awkward experience was a designer shop that sells a selection of dresses (ballgown, cocktail, wedding, prom, bridesmaid etc...) and the second I got through the door a sales man dove on me loudly announcing 'I know why your here' in a shrill camp voice, he then grabbed my hand and practically dragged me over to the prom dress section and started showing me hot pink sparkly ballgowns - he looked confused by my lack of 'wow' at these big fat gypsy wedding style dresses so I just mumbled 'im just here to look' and pretended to look at a dress then hastily left - I felt like just yelling 'Ive had my 'prom' I left school over 10+ years ago mate' though, im very self conscious about the fact I oddly look like a child (I dont think I do but everyone constantly mistakes me for a 16/17 year old even though my younger friends have no problem) but I dont think he meant to be rude but it incredibly uncomfortable

That's awful service, they should be begging for your custom Smiley sad

Sadly, I've found as a larger bride (which you absolutely are not!), that most shops aren't interested. I was at a wedding fair recently where I had one shop owner look me up and down and say "we don't have anything in YOUR size" and another who decided that I was just far too fat to talk to and literally leant over me to talk to someone else, ignoring my question and invading my personal space!!

I just don't understand why people are like this, surely you won't make anything if you have that attitude,

Thank you. Im struggling to find a dress in a shop with red on it. I dont want subtle red beads or anything, I want like a red cut out on the train.

Can you tell I like red lol. The only dresses I have found like this are on the internet and dont really wanna go there

I'm actually a size 6 -8 but I also had lots of bad experiences in dress shops. Also the majority of dresses I tried on were 12 +

I went to around 11 shops in the end as I wanted to assess all my options and out of all of those shops, I'd say only 2 were good. The majority kept trying to sell me styles that I didn't like 'because they suited' me. In one shop I was subjected to well over 10 dresses, all of which I didn't like and I was in there for over an hour getting more and more flustered desperate to get out.

Overall I really didn't like my dress shopping experience and I couldn't get over how rubbish the shop assistants were at realising what you actually want!!

Im sorry to hear that. I find it astonishing how many brides have had a bad experience with their dress shopping.

Im off to a sale this weekend so will hopefully find one. If not, I think its getting one off the internet

I had this too (not the bad experiences so much as the being smaller than the samples)*. I was a firm size 8 at the time but with a very athletic build. One of the dress shops was useless - kept trying to pin the dresses so they stayed up, which meant I couldn't see the back properly and kept making comments ("Oh well, you'll need to get something to pad your bust out on the day", "our brides aren't usually straight up and down" etc) - but one of the others was fabulous. They put sponges down my back (the sort you might use to wash a car) to hold the back of the dress out so I could see it properly, and actually made the fact that none of the samples fitted quite entertaining rather than embarrassing.

*Having said that, a lot of samples are (or were) in US sizes, so even though a dress says it's size 8 on the label, it may in fact be a size 12 - which not all shop assistants seem to realise, and those that do often aren't able to say which are US sizes and which are UK.

I found this too. Im a size 6 to 8, and the shops I have so far been too stock dresses from size 12 onwards. Iv been clipped in using clips and cushions but it is really hard to see how the back looks and in some dresses how my shape would look. The shop I am going too next Saturday also told me they stock 12 onwards. They just keep telling me to imagine it being my size, which is easier in some dresses than others. Other than that so far its been a lovely experience.

    xx

    Im confused now...

as with the girls above im a 6-8/8-10 depending on dress (size 10 shoulders, size 8 chest, size 6 waist and size 10 hips) and as said before have majoritivly found size 12-14 and ever 16 dress (especially at the cheaper end of the scale or in the sales) so how come the girls these size cant find dresses?

and how come us 6-8/8-10 girls cant find dresses if that's all these other girls are finding?

maybe shops should say what they stock on the way in

I went to a trunk event at the boutique and they come from the designer. They were all size 8. I'm a 12 - 14 so had to use my imagination too. I think people are very lucky if they manage to find dresses in their size. We're all different and there are so many styles the chances of finding one that fits off the peg is so slim (please excuse the pun lol). Hence we almost all need a seamstress.

Whatever, we're all customers whether we buy or not, and deserve to be treated with respect, consideration and just plain good manners. Xx

To be fair the dress shops l went to were polite, respectful and honest. The first shop did say a dress made me look "matronly". Which is a bit odd l think as l am a size 10-12 and 34 years old. A girl who l used to work with picked her wedding, loved it and then the dress shop asked about size. When she said she wasn't planning on losing weight then they intimated that she was a bit of a heifer. She was only a size 10 and a small one at that!
