Anyone else buying or considering buying a 2nd hand dress

MrsSkinner2be, 3 May, 2013 at 16:40 Posted on Planning 0 19

I have found someone selling my favourite dress so far on ebay. It retails at £1295 and she's selling it for £450. She said I can go try it on then if I like it I can take it away that day?

Has anyone else done this? Does the quality of the dress still look good or does it look worn? I just think if I can get the real thing for £450 instead of £1295 then it's worth doing - however I wonder if some people will think its cheap buying a dress someone else wore at their wedding?

How would they know (providing dress is in good condition, of course)?

I would def consider going this , its a bargain and if its the dress were you wanting anyway go for it , like Mrs Brown said as long as its in good condition then theres no problem

I think you lucky to have found yourself a bargain there Smiley smile

If its a dress that you love and in great condition then I don't see a problem Smiley smile I am considering it myself.

I was planning on doing this - picking a dress I loved then looking for a second hand one and would have definitely done it but the dress I've fallen in love with has only just gone into shops so there's none around yet and won't be for a while if at all so I've ordered it. Nobody will know if it's in good condition!!

My friend wore a second hand dress and she looked beautiful. As footlong says who would know? It's a good way to get the dress you want at a price you can afford.

Aimzz why do you have two dresses? I missed that one?

I'm a massive fan of charity shops and would definitely consider a second hand dress. I've been looking out for but they all seem to be 80's meringues or really really small. I found the second dress I tried on and lived for £400 but it was a size too small. I would've gone to try on otherwise. I think it's nice to give a dress another chance so to speak.

If its in good condition it is def worth it. I got mine in a sample sale, so lots of people had tried it on, all I had to do was ask my mum to sew a couple of the loose buttons and it looked brand new, no-one would suspect otherwise, and it means more money in the budget for other things! I think if you try it and love it, go for it

I got my dress second-hand from ebay. The woman who had it before is lovely, we're FB friends now and I've promised to keep her updated about wedding planning progress! The dress is in practically perfect condition, there are a couple of loose beads on the bodice but it'll take me a couple of minutes to sort that. I'm adding a couple of details to the dress and removing the train so it'll be slightly different but it was great to see what it looks like on someone who's about the same size as me.

I was on the lookout for preloved dresses so went to our local bridal shop to see what shapes and styles did or didn't suit me. I didn't get very far with it though- the second dress I tried on and fell in love with happened to be in the sale so I bought it there and then as it is a sample dress, others will have tried it on, but it's immaculate. Any necessary alterations would have been done for free (luckily after my fitting this week they said it needs nothing doing) and it will be specialist cleaned ready for collection a couple of days before the wedding.

So yeah, I'd definitely have a look at the dress if I were you, but if it turns out not to be the one, don't rule out sample sales- mine was under £400 :0)

I bought my Maggie sottero dress for £250 second hand - with all its certification, shawl, bag etc in top condition. I'm having it re-cleaned, pressed etc and no-one will know its second hand! I can't bring myself to spend thousands on something I'll wear for one day.

I've bought a second hand dress off preloved. It's a maggie sottero that should have been £1250 but I just couldn't afford it. It's been professionally dry cleaned and looks brand new! I love it. None else will know where you bought it from and think what you can spend the money you've saved on......x

I think a pre loved dress is an excellent idea and wish I had looked around before I bought my new dress. I paid 2,000 for my dress and have since seen 2 preloved ones in my size advertised for less than half that amount. It makes me feel slightly sicky so I try not to think about it too much.

I did exactly this, & bought a genuine Maggie Sottero off ebay. The previous bride had only worn the dress for 7hrs or so, & had made no alteratations as had always planned to sell it on. It was perfect & came with dress bag, paperwork etc. No one knew it was 2nd hand at all.

Double check the sizing- some brands use USA sizing which can be confusing here. Ask to see any receipts for the dress purchase and dry cleaning & any certificates/paperwork that come with it.

Aaw bless you, good luck with yours too - don't feel I did much to help but I'd also like to thank everyone on here for their responses it's made me feel certain what I'm doing is right - watching my email every five mins now - emailed her yesterday and she hasn't replied yet. Certain she will as she emailed me asking how my last dress shop appointment went she's probably just off enjoying the bank holiday weather.
