Anyone else without power?

KB3, 21 July, 2009 at 10:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 39

Is anyone else unfortunate enough to be without power since yesterday lunchtime? According to the BBC website we may be without power until tomorrow morning! We've shipped the kids off to my dad's house as they were going stir crazy last night. I'll be heading over there tonight with the contents of our freezer so we can cook and some washing as we are going on holiday on Friday.

We've been keeping an eye on our elderly neighbour who is probably coping better than we are, she's more concerned for me than for herself. Bless her.

I logged on to see if there was anything from anyone on this. We also have no power and I just called EDF and they have no idea when it might be back. Someone at work lives in Barnehurst and they got it back at 11.30pm last night but it's being provided on a rota system so it's gone again. Same mans sister lives in Dartford 2 roads away from the problem and she got power back at 6.30am. Have left H at home in case freezer leaks as it's in the dining room on the wooden floor. Do you think everything will have defrosted by now?

We live about a 5 minute drive from the area and have had no power whatsoever since 12.47pm yesterday afternoon. Our freezer was defrosting this morning, I put everything from the fridge in there to at least chill for a bit. Thankfully we are going on holiday so didn't do a big shop this week. Still wasting food mind.

Our freezer is full but I haven't opened it to see how it's doing just in case. Apparently if there are still ice crystals in the food it can be refozen so I'm hoping it comes back soon even for a few hours but they didn't sound very positive of that. Nightmare for you, tis the last thing you want a few days before your holiday!!

Here's the latest update from EDF a few minutes ago:

We’re sorry some customers in the Dartford, Broadway, Crayford and Erith areas are still off supply since the fire causing major damage to our cables yesterday.

Our engineers are working continuously and although the main repair is complex and difficult they have made good progress with restoring some supplies overnight to parts of Erith and Broadway. These customers should not go off supply again.

Other parts of Erith, Broadway including Crayford will be connected throughout the day on a rota basis for periods of three hours to allow as many people as possible to have power at some point during the day.

Crayford has had supply on overnight but will go off at 09.00 today and on again after 6 hours this will continue until we make permanent repairs.

The following postcodes, all starting with DA will be on between 0900 and 12.00 and then on again 6 hours later until we complete repairs. The postcodes are DA 161/163/162/68/74/53/51/68/75/76/175/176/81.

The following postcodes, all starting with DA will be on between 12.00 and 15.00 then on again 6 hours later until we complete repairs. The postcodes are DA 163/161/75/51/53/52/67/74/16268/74 also SE20 and SE18 2.

We realise some postcodes do overlap.

We’re sorry but customers in Dartford will be off until permanent repairs are made.

We will of course continue to work around the clock to complete permanent repairs. Thank you for your patience.

Thanks for the update Sez. My H has just called to say about the rota basis. I'm not sure what good a few hours during the day is going to help those who work, but hey.

Looks like we will be out until the forseeable.

Nightmare. You could tumble dry or wash at 9pm KB3, that's something I suppose.

Good job you're going away. We had to endure about a week or more of no water in 2007, was awful, had to use a launderette and everything ?

Our postcode isn't on there we are DA1 1, so I guess we won't be getting any power. H is at home anyway and there's still nothing.

Ours went off at lunchtime yesterday and came back on at 9am today. Apparently it's going off again until between 6pm and 9pm tonight. I haven't opened my freezer and I know I've got loads of cooking to do when I do Smiley smile) Defrosting the freezer was on my "To Do" list, so it looks like I'll have it done for me.... The babies(!) had a coldish bath last night which they enjoyed and I had a stand-up wash this morning with water boiled in a saucepan. Luckily, I cook with gas......

We are DA1 as well Sez, right slap bang in the middle of it all! I hope they get it restored by tomorrow. One report I've read is saying Thursday earliest!

My sister's friend has called her, she lives in Welling. A guy from EDF has knocked to inform them their power will be off from 6pm-9pm tonight so they can re-route to Bexleyheath. I hope they don't re-route Belvedere, I need my mum's electricity ?

My power went off for about 2 hours yesterday and I'm in Belvedere (DA17 5) - thankfully it has been ok all last night and my hubby says it has been on all day so far today.

EDF were saying that freezers normally stay frozen for between 12 - 15 hours (and some newer ones last for 24 hours) - if you don't open the freezer door and break the seal then stuff should stay frozen for the time they said.

If stuff does defrost and becomes unusable, don't forget to keep a list of everything (with photos if possible) for claiming back the money from your energy supplier!!!

I can see what they are trying to do by giving everyone a few hours of electric on a rota but it is shocking that so much of the power we get comes through just one sub-station! Hope they catch those blasted kids!!!

Fingers crossed everyone affected has their electric back soon!

Hey Seaull - don't see you around here much ?

Some cynics are saying they are restoring power for a few hours at a time so they don't receive thousands of compo claims!

Can you claim from them for food in the freezer then? I just rang our insurance co but the excess is £150 so I doubt it's worth it.

I haven't opened the doors but our power has been off for over 26 hours continuously so I doubt it'll still be ok when it comes back tomorrow or later.

Hey KB3 - bet you are looking forward to your holiday with all this going on - have you still got much to wash?

well to be honest seeing as most people have been without since 1pm yesterday, giving people power from 9am this morning still means they were without power for 20 hours anyway so I don't think they are going to have much choice but to pay. Its the people with little babies I feel sorry for ☹️ - at least it's not the winter though as otherwise people would be in real trouble.

Is everyone without electric still able to use their gas boilers or do you need the electric to get the gas going?

No the boiler won't fire up because you need electricity to ignite it I think....cold showers for now unfortunately. I was thinking the same about people with babies must be a nightmare for them.

We've had 3 hours of power today (9-12) and it's due to come on again tonight (6-9). I'm going to have a shower - I've got a gas boiler, but as Sez said, it won't fire up without electricity. I've had to boil saucepans of water for washing up/baths etc. So I'm going to have a washing fest tonight! My freezer was off until 9am today, so that would be about 20 hours - I've got a bit of catching up to do at home, I think!

Ours went off yesterday at about 1pm, but luckily back on now. I was starting to panic because i hadnt sterlised the babies bottles, or given any of the kids baths etc.

I really feel for people who are still without power now, its awful. Ive been told 2 different reasons as to whats happened, 1st was vandals who started a fire, 2nd was a workman cut through a wire? Dont know how true either of those are, im just hoping that its sorted for everyone soon.

    Morning everyone,

We are still without power - are you the same Sez? Took a wash load over to my mums and any food we could salvage from the freezer to cook. Got there for 6pm, youngest jumped in the shower, chicken & chips almost cooked when the power went down there at 7pm. Thankfully my washing was done. Headed back to our house. Power on in Crayford and the main road of West Hill and the new estate, getting excited at the thought of having power again but turned into our road and nothing. Thankfully Tesco had a generator so we could stock up on drinks and nibbles. An early night was had by all.

I'm hoping it's back on today. I have a holiday to wash & pack for!

My cousin has a 1 week old baby to look after. She's been camping out at her SIL's in Hextable as they have power thankfully. Still it's not what you need with a newborn.

    Morning,

We got ours back early hours of this morning. We went to Bluewater for dinner last night and when we came back we got very excited too because in Stone there was power but we also had nothing at home and had an early night. I've checked the EDF website and they have brought in more generators overnight so another 11,000 people have power. Let's hope they get yours back today KB!! It was so nice to have hot water this morning and be able to straighten my hair.

We don't have gas at all Sez. Well we do the BBQ in the garden but it took MrKB ages to boil a pan for a coffee yesterday morning. We'll just scrounge off of family for now.

Let me ask you something, if you had a generator that worked, as you were using it to power your house / needs, and across from your house is an elderly lady in her 80s who lives alone and had ac fall recently. Would you offer her the use of your generator? Or offer to heat some water for her?

Do any of you know if the power has gone off in Welling again today? We got power at about 3am this morning in Bexleyheath - but I was told that it was going off again all day so they can fix the actual cable....

I had a shower and a hair wash when the power came on again last night - I was like this ?

KB - I'd ask the old lady what she needed, offer to heat water and see what else was wanted - I think I'd cook something for her as well - but then, I'm not going on holiday in the next couple of days......

Yes of course, why? Our next door neighbour is elderly and H went over a couple times yesterday as she doesn't have any gas and the lady the other side took her a pot of tea before she left for work.

Campergirl I'm not sure but here's the latest on EDF website:

Update 08.00 - Power interruptions affecting Dartford area

    Print page

Electricity supplies were restored to thousands of customers across the Dartford area overnight as EDF Energy Networks brought in back up generation from across the country.

Generators were brought in from as far afield as Scotland, Bristol and Great Yarmouth as one part of the company’s major operation to respond to serious damage to high voltage electricity cables in the Dartford area.

Generators are now providing back-up power at 38 sites in the area, supplying 11,200 customers, with more due to be connected today. This includes a number of care homes across the Dartford area.

Engineers worked though the night to deploy the generators across the affected area, concentrating on sites with vulnerable customers and areas where generators could provide power to the highest numbers of customers possible.

EDF Energy Networks engineers continue to work on emergency repairs around the clock, following the fire which caused serious damage to high voltage electricity on Monday. The damage resulted in the loss of electricity supplies to thousands of customers across the Dartford, Crayford, Bexleyheath, Erith, and Orpington areas.

We believe it is likely that the fire was started by unauthorised people interfering with the cables. Police are investigating the incident.

This is a significant incident which we are responding to in a number of different ways:

*At the peak of the incident about 92,000 customers were without power supplies. By switching supplies to other circuits on our network we restored power to 31,000 customers on Monday. We returned supply to a further 3,000 customers in this way last night.

*Through rota connections we have been able to restore power on a temporary basis to customers in Crayford, Erith and Bexleyheath for three hours at a time, before switching supply to another area. In total about 45,000 customers will have access to power at some point during the day through this approach, in addition to the 34,000 fully restored.

*Through the use of generators we have provided supplies to 11,200 more, including focussing on vulnerable groups. More generators will be connected today.

*We are working round the clock on a permanent repair to the damaged cables. Our priority is restoring power to all our customers as quickly as is safely possible, and we continue to work on a full restoration of power supplies. Because of the extent of the damage and complexity of the repairs, it is not possible to be completely accurate but EDF Energy Networks hopes that power will be restored to remaining customers, not already back on supply either permanently or temporarily, late this evening.

EDF Energy Networks would like to apologise to all customers affected by this major incident and we thank everyone for their patience while we work to return supplies.

We would like to ask all customers being supplied by generators or on a temporary basis to use electricity for essential purposes only. In this way we can ensure the situation does not become overloaded and as many people as possible have power.

We have also enlisted the support of The British Red Cross who have visited a number of vulnerable customers to offer advice and support.

EDF Energy has brought in extra call centre staff to provide information and advice to customers.

For information on rota connections and on the latest estimates for restoration of supplies, please contact our Emergency Contact Centre on **** or if you have internet access, www.edfenergy.com sets out when different areas will be provided with temporary supplies through the rota connections plan.

It's just the decent thing to do isn't it? The guy who lives opposite us has a generator running in his garden powering his house. MrKB saw it yesterday when they were talking. He's not once offered our elderly neighbour use of this power or any assistance at all.

We've been keeping an eye on her, we always do if I'm honest, I'm the one who called the ambulance when she had her fall the other month & collected her from hospital. She's got food, but we've been buying the daily paper for her and if the power isn't up today when MrKB finishes work he's taking her to a supermarket that is open. We want to make sure she has stuff for when we are away.

I've just called EDF re claims and a decision hasn't yet been made as to whether or not they will be offering compensation as it's "Exceptional Circumstances".

I would have thought most decent people would check on an elderly neighbour or offer them assistance. My dad was put out when we had the bad snow as his next door neighbours both knocked to check on him but he is 71 and I was very pleased they had. Our neighbour is very sprightly though and walks her dog miles everyday, she was out yesterday at the crack of dawn with her friend who lives nearby and reported to H that nothing was open in town and she was most disappointed lol. She was the same when we had the snow, H said I'm going to knock at Pat's as I don't want her going out in this but she'd already gone when he got round there at 8am!!

Sez and KB3, I must be right near you both, I am DA1 too. Me and my OH stayed with my parents in Sidcup last night and looks like we'll have to tonight aswell, it doesn't even look like our flat was included when they've been doing the 3 hour stints.

My OH spoke to EDF earlier and they said they're confident that the power will be fully restored by tomorrow morning. I just feel for people who haven't got anyone close by who can help them out, as well as families with young children and elderly people.

Imagine if this had happened back in March when we had all that snow and sub zero temperatures, it's bad enough now but could have been even worse then!
