Anyone estimate double glazing cost in a flat?

dippy dora, 30 August, 2009 at 23:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I know this is probably going to be a 'how long is a piece of string' type question but any idea on the cost of double glazing?

I have a 2nd floor flat and need 4 windows replacing, currently have rotting wooden frames and would like them replaced with UPVC. 2 windows at the front of the building and 2 at the back. I don't want anything fancy, just plain windows that open, shut and aren't drafty!

An estate agent told me it would cost around 1 1/2k but I thought it would be more than that? I'm meeting 3 builders for quotes over the next couple of days but wanted some kind of idea before I saw them and can't find estimates using google.

Thanks, dippy

See what the builders have to say - they can see how easy it will be to get to them, what size the windows are, etc

If you're leasehold then presumably you have checked witht the freeholder as this is normally a clause in the lease

Thanks, I'm meeting the first one this morning but always get worried that I'll have no idea if they're trying to fleece me or not. At least I'll be able to compare the quotes once they're in.

As a block we bought the Freehold a couple of years ago which now makes things much easier regarding building work and upkeep to all the flats.

I think that it might be more than that. We had our rental flat windows done earlier this year and I was shocked at how much the quotes were, in the end we got it done for about 3.5k, that was for about 6 windows, its a 10 yr old flat so the windows weren't huge by any means. We did have to get brown frames though so that might have made a difference to the cost.

I'm having uPVC windows put into my rental flat soon - 5 windows, 1 of them a bay window and the quote is £2,500. The whole block is being done organised by the residents' association and we got 3 quotes - this was the cheapest.

This is in London so not sure if that puts the price up.

    Thanks everyone.

The first quote has come in at £3000, he said that it was more expensive as I have 2 floor to ceiling windows that will need toughened glass. I'm meeting two more builders tomorrow so we'll see how that goes.
