Anyone ever been to the Latitude Festival? WAH I'm marshalling!

KJB, 24 March, 2009 at 11:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 25

I've just been reading about the Latitude Festival in July. It's the 4th year apparently but I've not heard of it before.

From the write up it sounds like it could be really good, but I am so NOT a festival goer - photos/descriptions that I've seen/heard of Glastonbury is my idea of HELL.

If you've been to Latitude, what was it like?

UPDATE: Wwwwwaaaaahhhhh. I think I've got a place marshalling. I had an email from the organisers this morning to confirm they've got my application and my status on the online application website should change from 'application received' to 'confirmed' over the next couple of days. I'm a bit surprised as on the application form I ticked NO to all the questions about experience of festivals or marshalling as I;ve never done anything like this before. Oh well, it'll be a laugh and a good experience I hope.

Oh. My. God. Anyone got a tent I can borrow?

I've not been but know the location - suuuuperb.

Friends have been and it is meant to be very good - more sociable than glastonbury by a long long long way.

    Hth a bit

Three friends and I have just bought tickets to go this year.

We've never been before but have always fancied it - it looked great last year.

We've always gone to Leeds festival before but it's becoming far too commercial and too big so Latitude will make a nice change!

    Thanks all.

I'm a bit worried as I have just printed out all the stuff about signing up to be a steward..................waaaahhhh....it's one way to get in for free and will be a good way to go on my own and meet new people as I don't think anyone I know will be interesting in coming with me.

I'm sure that these places are oversubscribed though and as I have no experience of festivals, let alone stewarding, I doubt my application will be successful, even if I do decide to go for it.

    KJB,

I can put you in touch with my sister, if you would like. She worked at Latitude festival last year and she had the most amazing time. She said that it is a very friendly festival and nothing like other festivals.

Let me know if you want her email address and I will let you know.

Its supposedly the 'family friendly' festival, so that might tell you a wee bit more about what it would be like.

Always has a really impressive line-up, similar to electric picnic here in Ireland.

Thanks Shortie. I think I'll apply and then if I get a place, I might get her details to help calm me down when the panic sets in!

I've just seen the line up and now I'm badgering Mr K to go. It looks fab. I've never done the festival thing, but I'd like to try it out.

No problem KJB. My sister goes to it on her own too and has made some briliant friends.

Latitude Festival looks brilliant, we saw a bit of it on TV last year and vowed we'd go with the kids one day.

By the way, just to warn you, 'stewarding' can be a bit of a catch-all for 'dogsbody'! You'll be as likely litter picking or doing bag searches at the gate as anything. but if the weather's nice, who cares? You'll still get a chance to catch some of the acts too. Have a lovely time.

I'll be quite happy litter picking or doing bag searches - I'd actually rather be doing this than telling people off for misbehaving!

You're required to work 3 x 8 hour shifts over the 3 days - one of which will be a night shift, and the rest of the time you're allowed to do what you want. They try to let you have one of the main afternoons 'off' as well.

We went 2 years ago, wanted to go last year too, but it coincided with my son's 2nd birthday, so we thought we'd better not! Had a fab time, it's really friendly, not too big either.

Have a great time, and pack your sunnies, we had gorgeous weather!

You'll need wellies regardless of rain. Imagine the state of the loos after 3 days ... I've seen people in flip flops standing in mud created by 3 days worth of piss before. Not entirely pleasant.

Have a fab time. I'm gutted I didn't think of it.

    Oh excellent! ? how fantastic.

You need tent? We have tent. Seriously, we have a pretty decent little dome tent if you want to borrow it? I'm sure we could get it to you directly or via one or other of the Bristol hitchers before August.

Thanks but I think I'll just try and get a cheap tent on the bay of e. I'd hate to borrow one and then it get trashed due to bad weather .

I have worked at various festivals on welfare. God I have some stories! It was definately good times and I got to go to more festivals than I could have afforded at the time and made some good friends. The camping is undoubtedly 'posher' when you work, and your camp portaloo will be so much less grim. You may even have showers and access to Janets Cafe (festival workers cafe - totally and utterly magic!). Nowadays I am more time limited with weekends away so I don't work but go to one festi a year (usually V but this year probably reading). I you live near Luton I have the festival tent to end all tents, an absolute cracker though I say so myself. You are an established Hitcher, so I wouldn't mind the lend.

Thanks for the offer MJ, but I'm nowhere near Luton. Plus I wouldn't want to be responsible for wrecking anything. I've been told that marshalls have access to the 'crew cafe' so with that and the other food stands that'll be around I'm hoping I won't have to bother with camping stoves and the like.

I'm sure I'll be posting nearer the time for advice on what to take.

No, the crew cafe is Janet's cafe. You will probably get three meal tickets (ha ha it's like school) per day. The breakfasts are the most amazing hangover fodder there is (huggge Hash Browns). I have had a couple (or few) glasses of wine tonight, and frankly I am salivating just thinking about it ? Seriously though, fair enough, I don't know you, but I don't know anyone who has regretted festival working. I hope that you have a splendid time!
