Jacksmum, 4 August, 2008 at 08:30 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

Hi,

We're visiting Ipswich and Felixstowe for a couple of days later this week. Any ideas on places to go, things to do, good family food recs? Will have a 3 year old with us!

Many thanks!

I've not been to Felixtowe for a few years, but it always used to have shedloads of amusements, parks etc along the sea front for children. For a 3 year old, there are bits of good bucket-and-spade beach at Felixtowe, though it's mostly shingle.

If you have a car, you could go inland to Easton Farm Park, which is great for toddlers - animals to see and feed, nice walks. Thorpness is a mad little 1920s holiday village which has the "mere" - a very shallow boating lake full of artificial islands. You can hire a rowing boat and visit them all. We loved it when we were children. Fish and chips at Aldeburgh is a good food thing to do - there are some restaurants in the town, but they're fiendishly expensive on the whole. If you want a beach walk which is a bit less commercial seaside, we used to walk along Languard Point, just outside Felixtowe, where there are lots of old sea defences, birds to see and you can watch the ships going in and out of the port at Harwich.

Ipswich itself is a bit crap, it's just a town - but there's all the usual shops, food outlets etc. There's a swimming pool (at least there always was) though it'll probably be crazy in the holidays. Christchurch Park was always fun when we were little - playground, lots of space to run about etc.

    Pretty much ditto WplS...

Felixstowe is a generic seaside town - lots of amusement arcades etc. The beach is ok, but for better bucket and spade type stuff I'd head on up to Walberswick or Southwold.

From the Landguard Viewing Point at Felixstowe you can watch the ships at Felixstowe and Harwich. I think the Fort also has some activities on during the summer.

You can go on the foot ferry from Old Felixstowe over to Bawdsey - more beach up that way.

A walk along the river at Woodbridge is lovely on a nice day - there's a good playground at Kingston Field there. If you want to go swimming I'd go the Deben pool at Woodbridge rather than going into Ipswich.

Easton Farm Park is great for little ones.

Framlingham is a lovely town with a good castle.

There's also the castle at Orford - you can go on a river trip there which is quite popular.

If you need to know anything specific PM me - I live near Woodbridge.

    Hi,

Thank you both. This is really useful info. Will do a bit of surfing the 'net on the areas you've mentioned. Hope the weather holds!
