"The bridegroom at an exclusive country house wedding is suspected of starting a devastating fire which tore through a landmark castle yesterday (sunday) after a dispute over the bill."

I don't even know where to begin responding to that statement...

What a terrible thing to happen! It's such a beautiful building and if the Daily Mail story is accurate, what reckless, selfish behaviour from the man responsible. Aside from the damage to the building, he could have killed his closest family and friends. Plus, way to go with having your own wedding at your dream venue then doing something to prevent others from having the same. I get seriously pissed off at the complete lack of regard some people show for other people.

I would hazard a guess that it takes a certain type of person to get that angry over anything, no doubt exacerbated by copious amounts of alcohol...

Bit of an update here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-13836279

Given that the fire started at 5am on sunday morning, and a number of the guests were apparently still up partying I can't help but wonder if the marriage got consummated?

I guess he can kiss goodbye to the honeymoon, how do you claim that on insurance? "Unable to ago due to groom being arrested for setting fire to venue".

I think his new wife is wondering what the fudge to do about it all too, because everyone will know about it, and I'm sure most of us would be devastated if there was a fire at our venue whilst we were there - let alone the groom being responsible for it.

I'd have been more devastated than most given that it was also my workplace ?

I cannot imagine how bad a dispute it would have to be for the groom to deliberately start such a devastating (not to mention dangerous!!) fire.. how bad could the bill have been?

Immediate annulment for me, on the grounds of clear incapacity to consent.

I know that we all want our weddings to be memorable events and for people to remember them for years to come, but setting fire to the venue is a pretty extreme way...

Notice an update on the BBC page - the bridegroom has been charged.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-13850727

"Max Kay, 36, of Hunts Cross in Liverpool, is charged with arson and arson with intent to endanger life, a spokeswoman for Cheshire Police said.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before South Cheshire magistrates in Crewe on Tuesday."

He's an absolute idiot.....hope he gets put away for that, and that his bride sees sense and bins him off since he's just tainted not just his wedding day, but loads of other bride and grooms.

Great news is that the venue isnt gutted, and that weddings are still going ahead as planned as the main rooms that the ceremonies / celebrations that take place were not damaged.

A man has appeared in court accused of starting a fire at a castle where his wedding reception was being held.

Max Kay, 36, from Hunts Cross, Liverpool, is accused of starting the blaze at Peckforton Castle Hotel, Tarporley, on 19 June.

The hotel was evacuated as 100 firefighters tackled the blaze.

During a short hearing at Chester Crown Court, the property developer's bail was extended until October when he is due to enter a plea.

Mr Kay, a father-of-two, is charged with arson with intent to destroy or damage property and to endanger life and arson reckless as to whether life is endangered.

Peckforton Castle Hotel is a Grade I listed 19th Century country house built in the style of a castle.

We're photographing a wedding here on friday - went for a look round last week and its about 25% damaged by fire, but they have put a massive marquee out for wedding receptions to take place in.

Its such a shame, lots of people have postponed / cancelled their weddings as obviously they chose it for a castle wedding, not a marquee wedding.
