Anyone had or having a string quartet...?

GeordieBarbie, 1 December, 2009 at 15:51 Posted on Planning 0 15

D is not fully convinced yet, but i'm liking the idea of a string quartet for the ceremony. We had quotes a while ago for a harpist and D reckons since there's 4 of them, a string quartet will be much more.

We're not really having anything very show'ey or wow'ey and D thinks it might be OTT, but i'm kinda thinking that could just be the one little extragivance we have...

Any ideas on costs??

No, but I am having a pianist play during the wedding breakfast.

I'm not really sure why I am posting this as it is totally ireelevant to your post.

But I don't think it's too OTT, i think it would be nice on your boat.

We had a string quartet and I can honestly say it was one of the best choices we made, definitely money well spent.

We had them playing whilst the guests arrive, when I walked up the aisle, during the signing of the register, when we walked out and during the drinks reception. They really made the ceremony. I remember waiting on the landing ready for the nod to come downstairs and hearing them play was just magical.

If you have room in your budget I'd say definitely go for it! I was a little worried about it coming across a bit 'posh' or something but I did go without some other things so that we could have them and wasn't going to worry about what people thought. It turned out that everyone loved them!

We are going for a harpist who is going to play while we are having photos done etc, cant help on prices as ours is a friend of a friend. I think its a lovely idea and dont think its too showy at all.

    I'd say go for it!

If I'm going to be totally honest......nothing beats having live music for your ceremony, whatever the combination or instruments.......and thats coming from a DJ that provides music for ceremonies (ouch....just shot myself in the foot)

I have to agree with all of the above. Ours played for the same amount of time as Decembers did and I remember being up in the bridal suite hearing them play as our guests arrived and it was just wonderful. They really set the scene for the day.

You should be able to get one for £300. Where is your venue? If there is a university with a Music department near by you could always try there as they will be good but inexpensive. Know there were often posters looking for quartets for weddings round our department x

I lived with a guy at university who was studying music and they were always playing at weddings! If you don't have any luck in Bristol, gave a look at Cardiff Uni music Department or at the Welsh College of Music and Drama...it's only an hour on the train!

We're having one! They're playing for 3 hours and are costing £550 but I know you can get cheaper. I'm just using them because they were at my CBM's wedding and I really liked them. x

Thanks for the tip re. universities.

£550 for 3 hours - I want them for less than that. Was initially thinking just ceremony plus before so around 1 hour but max would be 2 as that's all we've allowed between start or ceremony and dinner. So, maybe it would be possible... I did put £250 on the budget for a harpist so there's a bit of spare cash there...

    Hi Geordie Barbie!

I'm having a string quartet, I'm geting married in a Castle - so it just feels right, also as it's a civil ceremony and there's no singing or traditional organ music we both felt it was something we needed.

They will play for 2.5 hours and cost £395.00. HOWEVER - to cut costs have you considered a Sting Trio? I reserched this option, they assured me that they would sound just as good and would cost £295.00. We decided to go for the four piece though as our friends are providing the DJ and evening music for nothing so had a bit more cash to spare.... :-)

    cheerio for now!! ;-)

I've been given the go ahead! Wooooo!!!

Will check out the costs and info and see what we can get. I did see on one website that they have the the song I really really want for the signing of the register on their repetoire list but i'm sure it also said not available in trios...

Will have a look see! ?

    Excited ?

We went for a string trio too. What's a viola between friends? They were brilliant, I definitely don't regret it.

Sent emails and had 2 responses back - 1 is booked and the other is waiting for confirmation if another client wants them that day. I hope they don't!!! ?

The 2nd mail quoted £360 for ceremony and £440 for ceremony & drinks ?
