anyone having a festival style wedding?

Joes wifey, 11 June, 2013 at 15:18 Posted on Planning 0 25

I only got engaged yesterday but already seem to know exactly how I want our wedding to be Smiley smile

Im thinking probably getting married in a church then having the reception in a field/marquee, im thinking hog roast, ice cream van, outside games, a stage with bands playing day and night.

Anyone else planning anything similar? or anyone that could give me some tips on how to do the festival theme on a budget?

any ideas welcome Smiley smile

A couple of my brides are having a festival theme and they are really good fun. Where do you live and we might be able to suggest a few venues?

This would have been our first choice for a theme if we'd had the money to pull it off! I'd ❤️ to go to a festy themed wedding!

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BOUNCY CASTLES!

OH and I were orginally going to have a festival type themed wedding.

We looked in to hireing a tipi and getting a hog roast, ice cream van etc.

If I hadnt fallen in love with my venue I would have done this. It made me change my mind.

Have a little google at tipi hire, there are some lovely ones out there which can be decorated with fairy lights and look fab!

    Yay, congratulations!

We're doing something loosely festival themed. We have giant tipis, gormet burger vans, outdoor music and entertainment and odd touches here and there, such as lanyards & haybales.

When you say "on a budget" what kind of budget are you aiming for realistically as that will help with suggestions ?

There are endless "hidden" costs if you want to literally go for a marquee in field type thing- such as having to hire in toilets, generators and water access, land hire itself and so on. It sounds so simple but can get mega expensive quickly.

If you have any specific questions you're welcome to PM me or ask away on here and i'll do my best to help Smiley smile

It's a great idea but tricky on a budget. Tipi hire is easy to work out (about 3K-4.5K depending on where you are in the country) but the toilets, bringing in all the water, generators etc really added up...which is why we opted for a (very) mini festival in a barn venue. We still have the music, the ice cream van, fish and chip van, barbecue, entertainment etc, but on a smaller scale; so an acoustic duo, a band and then a disco.

You may want to consider taking over a campsite for the weekend, as at least water and power will be readily available. I was just beaten down by the logistics I think.

I'll be looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Do you have people that will do this for free? A band for a wedding can cost a shed-load, let alone having several.

This is what I wanted originally but it just worked out waaaay too expensive Smiley sad We've opted for a hotel with garden games and a BBQ, ice cream van etc. instead. Compromise is a hard word to swallow but seems to come up a lot in wedding planning!

Thanks for all your replys, me and OH are gonna sit down this week and work out exactly what we can afford. There is a campsite near by that has a small country pub/hotel that already has marquees and a large field. The only problem is they wouldnt let me use outside caterers, but i still think it would work out pretty cheap. My partner is a dj/music producer so he has a lot of contacts when it comes to bands, we would be able to get at least 5 bands/artists to perform, and get a stage pretty cheap. I think the biggest problem in regards to money will be the fact that the owners of the pub wont let me use outside caterers.

I live in doncaster, there doesnt seem to be many other options, me and joe have both agreed that we dont want the traditional wedding (stately home, big hotel) even thought i think they are beautiful it just really isnt us. Id like the ceremony to be quite traditional and then after that id like a more relaxed and fun kind of atmosphere.

Thanks again for all your replys Smiley smile

    Xx

If your OH is in the music business like you say, then that would definitely help out on the live band front, and it would save you a lot of money as live bands are quite pricey (but in my opinion so much more worth it!)

All of your ideas sound so fab though, how exciting!! Good luck with everything, you'll have to keep us updated! Smiley smile

Ahh I'm shooting a festival wedding this year, I love them as I'm into both wedding a music photography!

My June couple are having tipi's but I think they are much pricier than a marquee, for the food they're having like gourmet food vans, exactly like the ones at festivals. If you're looking for a good hog roast I know a company, I think they're reasonable but I don't know the average rate. In terms of bands I bet you could get up and coming musicians who'd want to play. I once shot a wedding with a metal band (the couple were very metal) and they found their band just playing down their local pub and approached them and the kids were chuffed for the exposure.

I think your biggest expense will be the marquee/tipi.

Oh also, shave costs on the alcomahol buy bulk buying at costcos rather than having a formally run bar I'd say!

Doh, just seen about the outside catering thing! Yes that will be an annoying point but worth weighing up against the whole hiring marquee tipi thing as that gets pretty expensive, not to mention lighting it etc.

Could you get a quote for them to hire or supply the hog roast?

I got a rough quote from them to use there catering and basically it would be costing us around £1600 more than if i used an outside caterer. im gone have to look further afield for the same kind of thing. I suppose it doesnt have to be in a marquee, i would just like it to have a more outdoor feeling. Also id prefer not to have a sit down 3 course meal, id prefer to have something more casual iykwim Smiley smile

I love these kind of weddings but admit that the cost and logistics beat me down as well - was really shocked at the cost of marquees when I first started looking, Had a bit of a wake up call! LOL

We have now opted for a barn which already has toilets, water, electricity, floors etc.... just made it much easier and I am usually a planning queen! If you're on a really tight budget you might consider hiring a normal village hall - usually very cheap and also hiring a marquee lining. You could completly transform the hall for less than a marquee or barn etc and have that marquee feel. Many village halls already have stages and you'd be free to use whatever caterers you liked? Depends how much you want the 'outdoorsy/field' feel? Perhaps you could hire fake grass for the floor and bring the hay bales in? A cheaper venue would mean more money for other little touches like that. Plus if it chucks it down with rain (good olde UK) you'd not have a load of mud everywhere.

Like some of the other ladies have said, we too looked at a marquee and found that a barn venue worked out to be much more economical.

Our first idea was a festival style wedding, but for us it worked out too expensive after hiring Yurts, toilets, land, stage, bar etc. So we have changed our plan now. but thankfully, we have fallen in love with our new plan!

    Tips?

-Do you know anyone with a large garden/field, that you could possibly wangle for free?

-Some bars are free to hire, as they will just keep all the money made from selling drinks

-If you are lucky to hire a piece of land with toilets in, that is one less expense, like a campsite but that may prove costly as they will have to refuse any holidaymakers, so you will have to make up any potential losses due to exclusivity.

-You may want to hire your own wedding co-ordinater for smooth running of the day, unless you have a willing friend to do it!

-Have a weather back-up, don't bank on people being able to party outside in case of rain, have enough space inside to comfortably fit everyone just in case.

-Make sure the land has a water and electricity supply, and very likely HGV access will be needed.

-You will need to hire a caterers tent, with a hog roast, all they will generally need is electricity supply, not ovens and appliances etc.

That said, there may be some venues near you that will hire out their field, but you have use of their kitchen/facilities, depends on them really. Good luck with the planning, and get lot's of quotes, as I have found big differences with a few companies, but remember to slightly overestimate the boring costs like toilets, as a lot of companies charge VAT + delivery on top. I spent a very long long time trying to make our wedding dream a reality, but with a budget of £4000 (to include food) it was impossible.

Another option is, is that there are 'Wedding Festival Site Venues' out there, where they have their own Tipi, sleeping Yurts and furniture all included, so it is just a case of turning up & enjoying your big day!

    HTH and all the best!
