Anyone here a teacher (BT ref)?

bridejuly2013, 11 January, 2014 at 21:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Hi all, I'm a secondary school teacher and am finding the work/life balance really hard. Does anyone feel the same? We are thinking about ttc in May/June this year but if it doesn't happen for us quickly I'm not sure how I'm going to feel to be honest, it would be hard to leave teaching when ttc as i wont be entitled to maternity benefits in a new job so I think I have to stay in teaching until I go on maternity. I'm also not sure what career I should be thinking about changing to, i have a science background but dont want to go into research. I really enjoy organising things - maybe an events manager of some sorts, or a PA? I dont know, sorry for the ramblings! Thanks for any support or advice x

Can't help with the teaching or ttc aspects but as for your future career options I would say that events management is extremely hard to get into from my knowledge of it, also it's fairly area dependant. Pa might be a significant pay cut from being a teacher. Round here (south coast) going rate for a pa is only £22k, is that something you have looked into?

hope you find something you do like. Is there any chance of going part time as a teacher? My friend has just gone back as a primary school teacher 2 days a week after m leave. Is that an option? Or my mil works for an agency 2 days a week as a supply teacher- could that be an option?

    Hi

If you are planning to TTC you don't think you may regret not being a teacher? Just thinking of how handy the holidays would be when you have your own ones at school.....

How long have you been a teacher?

Thanks for the replies, after sleeping on it last night i think going back part time after maternity might be my best option. You're right to think about the positives e.g. the holidays, especially if I'm lucky enough to have children. Thanks for the support.

Please don't think events management is an easy option. It is long hours, often unsociable ones and you are dealing with sometimes very awkward clients.

The lack of work life balance you describe is not just in education. I think you would be better off staying where you are and speaking to your line manager about your workloadif you are finding it excessive.
