Anyone hiring their wedding dress?

bertiebertiebertie, 7 December, 2009 at 17:55 Posted on Planning 0 6

Evening all,

Just wondering if anyone is hiring rather than buying their dress for the big day? I'm quite unsentimental about keeping the dress and would rather hire something really nice and not have to worry about storage. However I'm finding it quite difficult to figure out how to go about hiring something as all the shops seem to be geared to buying.

Haven't started trying on dresses yet (need to get skates on as wedding is next Sept) - any advice welcomed before I do!

Thanks as always!

Hi, I thought of this when I first started looking for dresses, but could not find anywhere that hired them. I think you might struggle... sorry

You may find it cheaper to buy and sell on. I don't think i would like a rental dress... what if you find the one, then the bride that wears it before you spills paint down it and rips it! (i know it's a tad unrealistic, but you know what i mean!)

I hired but it wasn't a wedding dress, it was an evening/ball dress and it was teal green. i thought i wouldn't be bothered but it was actually quite hard sending it back. i checked if the lady would sell it to me but she said no. I made jewellery to go with it though and I've kept that. I might wear my tiara at our Christmas party just for fun. we're telling everyone to wear red and green and my tiara has green stones.

A lot of bridal shops do dress hire but they don't really advertise it as such because, as you can probably guess, it's not in their interest to do so because they would rather people buy than hire if you see what I mean!

I know of a few Brides who hired and the dresses were out of this world - no one would have known they were hired. Have you tried googling bridal dress hire/formal hire - once you get past the menswear you may find the wedding dresses hiding!

It was an option I thought I'd do before I found out I was getting married as I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a dress but once he'd proposed, I decided I'd rather buy a cheaper dress than spend the money hiring one. I was planning to sell the dress on as like you I'm not that sentimental HOWEVER once I'd found my dress I absolutely love it and think I will have to keep it forever!!

It never occurred to me. then again, i am 5 foot nothing, NOT a size 8 (or even close, lol) so getting a dress to fit me perfectly would have been a real nightmare. i spent £200 on alterations to my dress alone.

there are lots of high st shops that do bridal ranges (monsoon, bhs, debenhams, even coast do some that look bridal) so you could concentrate your thoughts on those areas if your budget is limited? if it isn't then you could just sell your dress on after anyway?
