Anyone in Berkshire - Venue Help... Ideas Needd

GeordieBarbie, 31 August, 2009 at 11:27 Posted on Planning 0 2

Hello

I'm in need of help & inspiration to find nice venues in the Berkshire area (I live in Reading but happy to travel out to surrounding areas - Newbury, Wokingham, Hampshire Borders, Oxfordshire, etc).

We've decided that we want quite an informal style of wedding - i.e not a hotel type or anywhere that makes us have X number of people for lots of money, etc. Ideally, we're loving the idea of going "old fashioned traidtional" and making it more a fun party than an extragavant sit down bash - like what your parents and grandparents had :o) Ceremony then off to the pub for a reception.

So, I'm looking for suitable venues - pubs, nice barns, halls, anything really! (though pub ideadlly so there's a bar already there). Does anyone know of anywhere that might hire out the whole pub, or that has a nice big room?

Also - any ideas for ceremony? Wokingham Town Hall looks just like what i'm looking for - will try Reading TownHall too (no pics on internet). I want something quite "grand" looking - not just a hotel room.

Any suggestions welcome!

Had a quick chat with the other half he thinks 2 current places I like for ceremony and reception are too far apart - boo!

So, i'm now looking for places in the Newbury area for a ceremony only. Any ideas? I've just found Mill Hall in Newbury which looks nice - something along those lines would be great (I really don't want a registery office or hotel room)

    Thanks!

PS - I may be gone a little while after today as off on holiday tomorrow so will check replies when I get back :o)

Hi there - welcome to Hitched...

I'm a HIB in Reading so know pretty much all the local venues (at least reception ones anyway).

Not sure of someone for ceremony only near Newbury - although I know Mill Hall as I've delivered there quite a few times and it's really nice. Does it not have a licence for civil marriages?

When I read your first post I was going to suggest Ufton Court as a barn venue which I understand is very flexible - the main building there also has a licence so you could have ceremony and reception in one place.

Otherwise Bix Manor is another flexible venue with a relaxed, informal barn type feeling. Not sure if nearby Henley Town Hall does ceremonies as I don't think Bix has a licence.

Pub wise, the Crown at Pishill has a nice barn function room attached to it. Again, don't think it has a licence so you'd again need to find a ceremony venue in the Henley/Nettlebed area.

Those are pub/barn type places I can think of locally, there are loads more - I have a whole spreadsheet of venues (90%of them local to Reading) if it's any use to you. Email me for more info on anywhere if I can help (bearing in mind I know them from a supplier's point of view rather than any idea on prices etc - although often get feedback afterwards from brides)

HTH - have a nice holiday!

    Hi

Thanks for the reply. Not sure how to message you through here (finding this site rather difficult to naviagte!) but will try and pick up with you on my return from holiday. Thanks very much.

I've checked out a couple of your recommendations and sent off some emails. I'd already come across the Crown at Pishill and should be getting a brochure from them (they do have a civil lisence)

Basically, I've found a pub near Newbury which I'm kinda really keen on (probably until I see it!) so am concentrating on that area first. Otherwise I like Wokingham Town Hall for ceremony and would then look for a pub around that area. The only reason i'm looking at seperate places is that I don't want to be tied to having a set number of guests for a sit down meal at £££ per head... :o)
