Anyone know anything about gallstones? **UPDATED**

yummymummy05, 16 February, 2011 at 20:12 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

I've been having pains on the upper right side of my stomach on and off for at least 18 months. I had always put it down to indigestion as it occured during the night and settled with gaviscon and painkillers. After i ended up in A&E on mini moon in November, i went to see my doctor who just prescribed some tablets to help with any stomach acid - not very helpful at all. Had another episode monday morning (1am) and ended up at the emergency doctors at 5am that morning. Anyway, cut a long story short, they think i might have gall stones. Im being referred for a scan to confirm.

Does anyone have experience of these as im not sure what happens next. What happens if it is confirmed to be gallstones?

Im going to ring the doctors again in the morning and see if they can push my scan through. Im not having pains as such, it feels 'tender' IYSWIM. ive got some tablets but they dont really help.

Any help/advice would be appreciated

TIA

Sorry to hear you have been poorly. Gallstones usually require surgery if you are finding them very painful. If the scan confirms gallstones you should be referred to a surgeon who would usually arrange routine surgery to remove the whole gall bladder. Unless you have any other major health problems this can be done by keyhole surgery and you should recover quickly. www.patient.co.uk is a reliable source for any health things, try searching for gallstones on there and you should find a factsheet. I don't blame you Smiley sad I have a few friends & family members who have had the op recently & they all feel sooooo much better for it. Cutting out alcohol & fatty foods might help in the mean time.

If it is gallstones definitely modifying your diet to reduce total fat will help. Hope you hear soon what it is.

I had gallstones and lived in fear of the pain. Had a quick ultrasound to confirm and was booked in for keyhole surgery. All better now. IME the pain comes on suddenly, hurts like hell for 2 hrs ish then vanishes again. Hope you get it sorted whatever it is

Thanks for the replies ladies. will it be confirmed at my scan or will i have to wait for the results? the pain tends to come on during the night and can last anything up to 6 or 7 hours

Mine were confirmed at the scan as you could see them there and then. I had lots of little gravel type ones and the sonographer if that's what they're called was moving them around

Hiya, i had gallstones ten yrs ago now, had pain etc afetr eating and mainly at night, ended up in a and e a few times, finally got a scan where they saw tht i had gallstones, was put on a list to wait for op, in the meantime pain got owrse, ended up with even a cuppa making me throw up, being sick all over myself in public on a regular basis, after a very bad attack went to a and e again, turns out i had so many my gallbladder was majorally infected, spent 2 weeks in hospital to get rid of the infection, then had an op to remove gallbladder, turns out i had so many that they had to open me up (between my boobies) to remove the 43! yes 43! gallstones! apparantly its rare to have tht many fully formed actuall stones, and when they do the ultrasound they can see u have gallstones but they cant really tell the extent, as they cant see what is building up, my advice would be, if the pain is getting more frequent or more painful, make a nuciense of yourself at the docs, if left as in my case the pain is worse than childbirth!!!

    Cosmo

like the above, I had severe attacks at night usually over 3 years and had a endoscopy as they thought it was stomach ulcers etc.

Anyway long story - but then went to have a scan for the gall stones and straight away told me thats what i had (this was 2006) and had loads of medium sized gall stones - the pain was unbearable and then was scheduled in for surgery within a few weeks - had them out through keyhole and absolutely fine now..x

big hugs though - the pain is really bad xxx

I finally had key hole surgery and have been ok!!
