Anyone met on a dating website? Help me settle an argument!

adgabe, 19 November, 2011 at 13:14 Posted on Planning 1 47

My best friend and I had this discussion last night. I say dating sites largely do not bring any sort of long-lasting relationship. She says they do and cited a couple of people she knows whom went on to get married. Okay, a *couple* of people to me is quite a low average when you think of how many actually join.

Have you met your other half online? Do you know anyone who has?

When I think about it, I suppose that metting online is possibly no different than meeting anywhere else, as if you meet anyone *down-the-pub* you have no guarantees it will work out. Right?

But I think that online, people are more likely to say whatever makes them look good and to hide any uncomfortable truths. Am I being unresonably prejudiced? If I am, I am willing to hold my hands up!

As a photographer I often ask my clients how they've met, and have not yet come accross anyone whom have met on a dating site, but I know of colleagues who have.

If you care to share your experiences or viewpoint, I'd be interested to hear. Not as a photographer, but as an individual ?

@ Annipie - Yes, Anniepie, I agree. There are no guarantees, however you meet, that people are always truthful. I am not dissing online dating, btw. Just wondering whether most experiences (at least of those here) have been positive ones.

    @ Jules'n'Mark - Fabulously heratwarming! ?

My OH's Mum and step-father met through a dating agency type thing before on-line dating existed and they've been married 25 years.

Two of my closest friends have both tried speed dating and dating websites etc however in the end both of them met their OH's through friends of friends.

    Hi Andrea

I met my H2B on a dating website and we are getting married 3 weeks today ??.

I am sure that people do say whatever makes them look good but there are some genuine ones on the sites.

I would say to anyone to give it a go as, like you say, its possibly no different to meeting someone "down the pub".

Yep, we met on Plenty Of Fish - I'd only joined for a bit of a laugh, he had joined many months before when he was feeling crap about his divorce and hadnt used the site for a while untill I messaged him.

I think, if anything I was the opposite to your perception and was brutally honest. I was in a really crap place in my life and made sure he absolutely knew about it before he even thought about asking to meet up.

As it was, we chatted online and on the phone for about 3 months, then went on a date and I moved in with him very shortly afterwards. We have been together just over 2 years.

Im another success story, met him on plenty of fish too. we will be together 2 yrs in january and get married next march. dont get me wrong there are a lot of men (and women) on the dating sites who are dishonest, but you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you meet your prince (or princess)

    It can work!

Being the nosy person I am, I generally ask my brides how they met their OHs and at least ten of my brides this year have met online. Match.com seems to be the one with the most success.

I love hearing stories of how people meet Smiley smile

Thank you to all whom have, thus far, shared their stories! They are lovely to read and show that my friend is on the money, if the above is anything to go by ? (she is always right! Damn! LOL)

I suppose that the logical part of me thinks that people are what they are, online or in *real* life. If they are honest, they will be that anywhere. Right? The same goes for the opposite.

Did you all know more or less straight away that your person was that... YOUR person?

Me and OH met on match but I had already met him in real life before that. It was only after match that he realised I was single so asked me out. My friend met her husband on a facebook winky/flirt game and they have been married for 2 years.

    We met via facebook....

Turns out he worked in the local shop near my friend and I used to shop in his best man's shop!!

    It was fate.lol

To be honest he was the only person I met online and we spent about 8months chatting before I had the courage to meet him.

We also met online. Carmen was miles away, and we mainly chatted for a few months.

As I thought we'd never meet, I was pretty open about my life, and we didn't really start dating until this time 8 years ago.

The 1st date was a meet+coffee, which led to a movie and dinner. After a few weeks, she came to my Flat in Essex, and the rest is history :-)

I too met my OH on plenty of fish. Me and a friend went on it for a bit of a laugh after many failed attempts at dating. Never thought for a minute that I would meet my soul mate and four years later be marrying him! Smiley laugh

I met my H on datingdirect nearly 6 years ago - been married 4 weeks!

I mentioned in my speech at our wedding - "

I signed up for internet dating having just left my ex-H, hoping to get out and have a bit of fun. They say you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince, and I was prepared for some frog-snogging. I met my H after just 3 weeks - I'd like to thanks him for saving me from the frogs!"

I met my partner through an internet forum - I went to meet up with some of the forum members in Newcastle whilst visiting a friend up there and he was there!

Had a long distance relationship for 5 years before he moved down south 2 1/2 years ago and we've lived together ever since and we are getting married in Oct 2012 Smiley smile

We met on Plenty of Fish too. I very nearly never answered his message as he was totally not my type, so glad I did though. We have been together 18 months now.

I don't see any difference in meeting online and meeting in a pub/club etc. You can't be sure that someone you meet face to face in a pub is genuine or honest at first either. I would thoroughly recommend it.

I know at least two couples who are married who met online. The only thing I would say is that an online forum like this is going to produce more people saying they met online, giving the internettyness of these people Smiley smile

We're another Match.com wedding. We met Jan 2009. The day I joined was the day Aidan changed his search facility to include Hull. Nov'09 we moved in together, then we got married 6 weeks ago today!

I did meet (not kiss) a lot of frogs on the way when I joined a different site in 2008. How can profile of 5 foot 10, well built with brown hair turn into 5 foot 4, red head with the physique of a matchstick man!!

Ive had 2 long term relationships and met them both online.

the first i met through a find a friend thing on the internet and we were together 2 years (although he was an abusive ar**hole who left me deaf on one ear and almost bling - that coukld have happened if id met him in a pub though)

Then i met my OH online... 3 weeks after that... 3 months after that we met and we've been together for 8 years

he lived 200 miles away and then one day (after about 18 months of long distance dating) he said... this is a nice view, we should get a dog and walk it along here... then he moved up 5 years ago and we've been engaged almost 2 months

My partner and I met online- Dating Direct I think. We've been together 7 years and married one month. We both had similar experiences in that he was the first person I went on a date with from the website and him too. We talked for ages via email before we met. I view it as similar to meeting someone in a pub / club on a drunken night out- there are no guarentees.

Yes - I have met my OH on AOL Dating in 2007 and we are getting married next month! We nearly missed out on meeting each other too, as we were both sick of time-wasters and guys after a bit of fun / girls only after money, cars etc... I was gingerly starting dating again post-divorce after an 11-year marriage. We had informed AOL we wanted to cancel our membership (unbeknownst to each other and never having seen each other's profiles) and they give you one more week live on the site before they switch off your profile. In that last week i did one more search and came across my OH's profile. I "winked" at him and he responded "Who, me???" (now he tells me he didn't think a beautiful woman like me would look at him - awww bless him!) and emailed that his profile was being switched off so if I fancied a chat here was his MSN Messenger ID - needless to say, I did want to chat. We had our first date on 6th Nov 2001 at tiger Tiger (lunchtime - I thought if he was scary or not right at least I'd have to make the excuse I have to go back to work LOL!). I was not only late for work, but our second date was the same night when he heroically sat through the entire "Elizabeth - The Golden Age" movie, perfect gentleman, only to see me again!!! By 4th date we decided we were an item and not just "dating" anymore but it was a full year (Nov 2008) before we moved in together. And on 23 Dec we will become Mr and Mrs!!! He is the most wonderful man in the world! (and, as my BMs keep reminding me, a bit of a toyboy LOL - he is 7 years younger than me - I am 38 and he is 31).
