Anyone moved to Virgin media? Couple of Qs

barongreenback, 9 August, 2009 at 21:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

I've realised I'm paying over the odds for BT and my broadband so was wondering if Virgin media could be the solution.

A couple of questions that don't seem to be on their website:

- Do you keep your existing telephone extension sockets?

- Can you choose where you put your broadband router?

- Is the service any good?

Thanks.

I use Virgin for my TV and phone now (not my broadband) but so far they have been so much better to deal with than BT (and Sky)

New house so can't answer your question about the sockets

We moved over to Virgin on Monday, after spending a year with Tiscali and suffering awful service.

So far, so good. The connection is reliable and fast. I could choose where things went but have a new phone extension socket (though the last one was in a really silly place)

    You won't regret it.

Thanks. I think I've worked out I can have faster broadband and loads of TV channels for about a tenner more than I'm paying now.

Oh and their V+ is literally twice as good as the Sky equivalent. You get 80hours recording time as opposed to 40 and you can record two separate channels whilst watching a third. They've got a deal on just now, I thin kit's £49 for the box with free install.

Not sure about the phone line question, although can definately confirm you can pick where you want your broadband router. In fact, our broadband router is on our attic, where our main pc is, and we have a wireless router from which we can pick up the net from anywhere in the house.

We are just about to move actually, and I'm hoping to renegotiate a deal and get the v+ box.

When I changed from BT to Virgin some years ago they just connected their wires to some little connection box already in the cellar and all the phone extensions stayed the same. I have no problems with the broadband, phone or TV.

Not me but our friends have recently gone to Virgin and say the service is fab, good broadband, TV and calls and all in was cheaper than Sky and BT which they had before by about 15 quid a month.

Have been with Virgin since they bought telewest. Generally good service, the V+ box is fabulous and broadband speeds good as well. Would definitely recomend if asked.

V+ is brilliant and you can watch 4OD, BBC watch again (whatever it's called) etc on it, rather than having to use a computer.

We don't really bother with the tv (got a box but it's not even plugged in) but their broadband is great and their support newsgroups couldn't be more helpful when theres been a problem.

We were telewest when I moved into this house, so I can't answer the questions on switching. However we only just switched to broadband and got to choose where they were going to put the wireless router.

Their service has generally been very good, I always ring up every 12 months as our deal finishes and tell them we're switching to sky so they reduce the package price.

If you go for the XL package you get music and TV on demand free. They have old series on the on demand, which is quite good if there's nothing else on the TV, the music on demand has playlists as well as the individual videos, so we often play those in our house.

My friend just changed to Virgin from sky/bt. She got a new number as she wasn't bothered about that. She got a really good deal, free install, free V+ box and discount off the tv etc for the first few months. She said it is working out cheaper than sky/bt for them. She seems to be ok with the broadband so far too. Said at first she prefered sky + but now loves the V+ box as you can do more with it.

I had virgin in my house with my ex and thought it was great (virgin not my ex ?). No complaints over service and seemed to be really reasonably priced compared to when you add up BT, sky and broadband separately. I agree with V+ being really good too.

I got to pick where I wanted the line coming in and where I wanted the router, tv box and phone line which I liked. When I get my own place I'll be using virgin again if I can as it'll mean I can afford lots of tv channels, a home phone and broadband.

I would urge you not to go to Virgin. their broadband is awful, they operate a throttling service and the best we ever got out of 20MB was 11MB and mostly it was between 3 and 6MB. Their customer service is awful, all Indian call centres and hey do not give a stuff. Our broadband was mostly worse than a dial up connection and pages would take around 15 seconds to load.

I wouldn't use them if they were the company on earth, I'd rather go back to carrier pigeon!

Another long term happy Virgin customer. I was with cable when I moved in here, there was no BT line in but that didn't bother me as I was happy to have cable. Been a few companies since it became Virgin and I have to say they are the most helpful when on the rare occasion Iv'e needed to phone them.

Our broadband is fab. We don't havfe the fastest but it's still great and we hammer it here at all hours thanks to me being online alot and my husband using the XBox live quite a lot.

I love V+ and being able to watch 4od and BBCi player on it as well as LOADS of other catch up stuff is great.Plus getting Setanta (and now ESPN now that's gone bust) to watch some of the football keeps my Liverpool supporting husband happy as we can't afford the extra to get Sky Sports) as you get LFC TV which is on quite a lot!

Never had a problem with the phone service either and I now get free phonecalls 24 hours a day to landlines.

Another happy customer here - and we've just moved house and totally renegotiated our deal which has lost half the crap. The only thing I miss now are a couple of channels but not enough to warrant the extra money to gain them and a load of rubbish channels I don't watch (and more importantly - V+ it's fab!).
