Anyone not having favours

MrsSkinner2be, 7 March, 2013 at 08:45 Posted on Planning 0 22

We are in the very early stages of planning (still to choose a venue) but I have been thinking about costs and I'm considering not doing favours at all - is anyone else not doing them?

I've been chatting to a few friends and the general feeling is that they are a bit of a waste of money and no one really keeps them.

Any ideas for something cheap but not naff?

I think its fine not to do them as they just get left on the tables anyway! I don't expect anyone would even notice. I like the charity ones though if you wanted something little, think they are only £1/2 per person and I think they mean a lot more than some sweets or chocolates x

    I'm not having favours.

Again due to costs and they are getting a meal and wedding cake, which porbably sounds bitchy on my part but I can't afford favours as well lol.

Alot of people I see now are doing donations to charities or lottery tickets lol.

    I have 2 plans for favors;

    1) getting some custom made dice with our name and date on it, costs about 35p per dice.

    2) wait till next valentines day, on the 15th feb buy a lot of heart shaped chocs at half price and use those!!

Neither of those are that expensive, I thought about a charity options and its not completely ruled out. Theres a local hospice that does a lottery card for wedding. i quite liked the idea!

We're not having them either. Three reasons:
    1) budget
    2) No one's really ever as bothered about them as you are!
    3) We've nowhere to put them as we'll hopefully be outside and very informal.

Before we decided not to have them I was going to do little packets of seeds, printed brown paper money pockets with our wedding monogram (!) and what they were, perhaps flowers from my bouquet. But even though they're small, we thought most people wouldn't bother with them.

I was going to have chocolates but have decided to scrap them now. I'm using the money towards bridesmaids shoes instead!

They're a nice touch but definitely not necessary.

We had mini cadburys chocolates in little boxes, however I forgot to take them to the venue! Only realised halfway through eating our main course!

Therefore my advice now is not to bother or if you really want to, only spend a small amount. Luckily ours were only £15 for all of them!

I've chosen to do them myself but I agree with everyone else, they are usually a waste of money and often, people don't even notice.

My sister did the Ferrero Rocher Sweet Trees as an alternative to favours and they were very well received.

My reason for doing them..... An excuse to buy chocolate.....! We're making them in the next few weeks and I just know I'll have a choccie tummy when done! (The same reason for doing the Ferrero Rocher trees!) ?

My best friend didn't do them but she had a free bar! I have quite enjoyed getting them ready, even if people leave them I am not that bothered, I have only made them for the women, the men are getting a charity pin and we donated £2 per man to Cancer Research.

We're not having favours. I think our guests will appreciate the money behind the account bar more than any potential favours that half the people won't even realise are favours or bother to eat/take/keep.

We are doing a couple of things for people to take home if they want. Firstly, a cookie bar as opposed to a sweet bar. This is also a good way to not need such a big cake! I will be making all of these myself including dairy free and wheat free options! Also, for the name places we are going to make fimo name places. Something like this

I have got a few different shape cookie cutters, like tea cups and birds, and have borrowed an alphabet stamp set from my sister. It is inexpensive and thoughtful!

I'm not having favours either, we've got 120 guests and that adds up even at 1 or 2 pounds per guest. I think they are a lovely touch but I honestly don't remember what the favours were from the three weddings I went to last year. I'm going to spend the money on extra reception drinks for the guests instead, My family will definitely appreciate that more.

Oh yes forgot to say, we had a free bar too so that is definitely a lot more appreciated than favours!

That is amazing! If I was getting married again I would want to do that (along with the teacups of course again!)

I had loads of plans for favours, was going to have mini Welsh lovesppons for the ladies and mini whiskies for the men, to reflect my Welsh/Scottish background. In the end though, it became insignificant, and was just another thing to bother with and pay for, so we didn't bother. No one noticed. What's more I can't remember any favours from weddings I've been to as an adult, if indeed there were any. The only ones I ever remember are the netted bags of almonds that everyone used to have in the 80s.

Just been talking to me Dad about this and he said he can remember when people used to put fags out on the tables at weddings for the guests! Brilliant! ! Would go down a treat for my side of the family, not so much for the boy's side.

I am having a sweet buffet and I will tell anyone who asks where the favours are (which I am sure they won't as I have been told they usually get left on the tables anyway!) that the sweet buffet is instead of favours and more enjoyable anyway Smiley smile

I thought about the fortune cookies too... Some great ones available out there. But we are having a candy cart now, so that takes care of the edible bit. So, one per household, plus musicians, caterer etc, I've got some beaut favour boxes and am putting in individual packets of poppy seeds with a card explaining that I want not only the memory of the day to last, but particularly poppies as they were the fave flower of my OHs mum who was killed just as we were getting together. FFIL does have a wife who is lovely, but I still want my 'true' MIL to play a part in our day. Just need to make sure I word it properly :0o

I have been to a lot of weddings in the last year or so (Friends have hit that age when everyone marries in one big rush) and honestly, I felt guilty that the bride went to so much trouble and no one bothered with them, and you see the staff clearing them all up at the end of the night - even things you'd think people would want like mini booze and choccies and things.

So, i would rather spend my money and time on giving them a good dinner, some good wine on the tables, and a good wedding cake.

Having said that, I did have one idea - rather than individual favours, I did consider buying boxes of 8 or 10 macaroons (they come in really nice boxes) and just put one box on each table with a thank you tag saying "thanks to you all for coming etc etc etc take one and pass them on!" I think you could do it with nice small boxes of chocs - I think Sainsbury's do a belgian selection for about a fiver that comes in a nice gold box, you could put one of those on the table? Its all the extra wrapping to make them individual that makes them expensive, so why not put a bigger box and tell them to share them around!

    xxx
