Anyone off today?

wonderstuff, 3 February, 2009 at 07:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 30

Bah! My school is shut for the second day in the row.

Getting annoyed now...particularly as weather doesn't seem too bad here. Is it worse in Leeds I wonder?

We've got 3 inches in Cornwall and the county has come to a complete standstill.

My son's school is closed again, but I think that's because the country roads here are pure ice and the buses probably aren't running. Am waiting to hear from Mr Hole, he left the house at 5.30 and was still on the train to Liverpool Street at 7.15.

My extra tall snowman started to lean forward yesterday evening and collapsed completely during the night, am vay vay sad ?

Im not going ino work as we had a site wide email sent round yesterday saying not to unless it was essential... According to my friend who I have speaking to that is near work

I am still 75 miles away and am debating if and when to go back today....

The roads look mostly clear so should be ok but its chuffing cold and if i go back earlier Ill just havew to sit in a coldish room on my own...

Me. the advice is not to travel unless you have to from my dear employer. I don't need to be in the office to do my job so i'm staying at home. I also have a poorly wheezy small person that i might need to get admitted to a hospital later on today if she doesn't improve.

I just walked the dogs up our lane to see how passable it is. As I'd have to use H's car as the land rover is in for repair, there is no way I'm chancing it as both our lane and the main road are pretty dodgy.

Luckily I can take flexi and work an extra day next week as I only work 3 days. H is also off so me, him and our 2 year old will take the dogs to play in the virgin snow in the field across from us!

I'll be home today - work said not to travel unless absolutely essential, and as I have many miles of untreated, icy roads, I'm definitely not driving anywhere.

Sparkling - hope your small person improves today - it's so worrying for you.

The snow finally arrived here last night and it was really lovely. Everything is white and we had snowball fights with the girls who live in the cottage across the road about 11.30 last night which was lots of fun. This morning it's still pretty much white and icy, the schools are all open despite the bus service not operating due to the ice on the roads?

H set of for work about 30 minutes ago, he just called and is half way there which sounds quite good apart from the fact that he works the other side of the island which is only about 9 miles away! I'm heading off shortly to fight my way into town. There are quite a few cars out there now so i think i'll be ok though i do live at the bottom of a hill!

Mr P has trudged up to the station to see about the train situation. I am probably going to stump up the road to see if I can shove the larger child in Preschool. Should be taking them to swimming but I am not driving in this and I am not sure if the trams are running (and even if they were I wouldn't because the hanging around between lessons is vile without a car to take us off to Sainsburys or something).

I'm off today, I got up to go to work this morning to see someone stuck in the snow in a far bigger car than mine so decided not to risk it.

We've got about 3 inches here i think and i know from my BIL who is trying to get to work that the traffic is at a standstill.

I'm sure my boss wont like it but thats tough, i'm not risking it trying to travel for an hour in this

Son's school is closed today - roads round here (especially side roads) are dreadful.

I was made redundant on Friday, so no job to go to, but the timing couldn't have been better, as if I had been working, I would have had to find childcare for my son! (always looks on the bright side of things, me!)

My brother was happily gloating about his school being closed this morning. You'd think he was a schoolchild instead of a teacher. He makes me bitter sometimes.

I'm at work already as there was no more snow overnight. we were told not to come in if it was too bad but I only live just over 2 miles away so i can walk if theres no buses. The roads around Dudley seem pretty clear and nobody here lives in the middle of nowhere so I don't think anyone has any excuse not to be in.

Absolutely nothing here (just outside Glasgow)

We had a small flurry yesterday which left about 1cm on the ground. It rained lastnight/this morning and it's all gone.

The wind though is biting cold!

I'm going to try and drive in cos I would feel bad staying off again, even though H said he would rather I didn't try and drive in this. I'm in Surrey so it's pretty bad here.

If I can't get the car away from the driveway though I'll just come back in and have another day with daytime telly.

I want to go in but it's just started snowing again reasonably hard so need to wait til it clears a bit - plus not sure we can get down the 1st uncleared road. My office is open til midday and I need to go in to save some work on to my laptop but don't think it'll be sensible.

My school is closed so I'm off today. We were open yesterday though but I was very relieved to hear we'd be closed today because the drive in was awful yesterday. It also gives me more time to work on my reports - wahoo!

I've made it in today! Was not a pleasant journey and I doubt I'll last the whole day seeing as it had started to snow again when I arrived at work!

Me, The local college is shut for the 2nd day. Am most annoyed though as I was due to sit my final exam today and have spent the last 3 days revising, just have to look at it as an extra opportunity for more revision, but was psyched to get it done and dusted!

The snow isn't actually that bad here now, traffic seems to be moving freely through our village, but am aware others on my course may have child care problems as all the locl schools are closed too!!!

I've not long got to work, it wasn't too bad a trip and here in town the snow and ice have largely gone. My boss has yet to arrive though which is quite funny as she's the one with the big landrover and i've got a clio!! Actually an email has just popped up to say she will be in "as and when" so that's nice ?

I'm in, decision to close all Birmingham schools (whilst a PITA for those with children) has meant the gritters could get round easily, traffic is half-term light and the majority of the workforce have got in with no trouble. I'm having the afternoon off to work on my assignment so I plan to be snuggled up in a well heated living room with some comfort food by 1pm. Happy days.

I lay in bed this morning listening to the radio anounce which schools were shut. Ours wasn't there and the weather said it was thawing, so I had just resigned myself to getting up then I got 'the phonecall'-yay!
I was in the garden by 8.15 building a snowman!

I called my boss this morning as I didn't feel I could take it as a snow day, but wasn't happy to drive, so said I would take it as leave - he still can't get in! So said to everyone not to worry about it!

It's ok here today - still snowy but 3 of my colleagues made it in today as opposed to just 1 yesterday. I'm not going in however, but working from home instead as after yesterday's traumatic journey and resulting accident I am not driving in snow ever again.

The snow has vanished here and all the schools are back. I am a tiny bit disappointed but really even one day is a bonus so I'm not complaining!

I'm home again today with two small people. The toddler's nursery is open today, but I'd have to drive there, then drive to the baby's childminder, which is 4 miles away and means using lots of back roads. I'm not confident enough to drive there, then drive into London. Nursery said they'd probably be advising people to come back by 3pm, so I'd spend most of the day driving with just a small amount of time in the office, so I'm doing what I can work-wise from home.

? at HH's snowman. That'll learn ya! We have a fabulous, still standing, snowman in our back garden. Our neighbour donated a hat and scarf from her dressing up box so he's looking very posh in his maroon velvet hat and sparkly scarf. Ner, ner, ner, ner, ner.

I've stayed home again today - I got as far as the bus stop and turned back, it's sheet ice out there and we live at the top of a hill so I feared for being able to get back up it! There was a particularly embarrassing moment where I was temporarily stuck clinging to a fence, excellent. Have got plenty of work with me to be getting on with fortunately (or unfortunately depending how you look at it I guess).

    I fecking hate winter.

I'm not sure if I'm going to go in or not yet. I work 4-8pm and it has been snowing almost constantly here (New Forest). I live at the bottom of a hill so H would have to park the car a mile or so away and then I'd have to go from there, none of our roads have been gritted and there's a good 5 inches of snow on them. It's a 12 mile drive.

I really want to go to work as I need the money and also if I make it to the end of March without taking a day off I get an extra days paid holiday. But I'm scared I'll crash (it's likely, there've been loads of accidents). Gah!
