Anyone shop at Hobbycraft for wedding bits?

emma_louise, 15 June, 2008 at 12:49 Posted on Planning 0 7

Am wondering if its worth me going to Hobbycraft to get some bits to make invitations etc? I've never been before and my nearest one in Nottingham, so didnt want to get there and find there isnt really anything that would help. Just wondering if anyone has been, can recommend going or is it not worth it for wedding stuff?

Have you got an idea of what you would like your invites to look like?

I like the whole pocket fold designs. Am looking for some nice decerative paper in pastel yellows and was thinking of having that half way up the invite then with a nice ribbon and a diamonte details then the rest of the invite white. Dont know if that makes any sense to you, but I can see it all in my head!

I haven't been in relation to the wedding yet, but they're worth a visit for a browse and inspiration if nothing else (it is huge!). They do all sorts of things, not just cardmaking so if you're heading into Nottingham anyway it's probably worth a wander round.

Personally, I'll probably be getting most of my bits online because it's a bit cheaper but the good thing with hobbycraft is no postage - if you only order a couple of bits from a website and then have to pay postage on top it's not actually any cheaper so a combination of the two is sometimes better.

I personally do not like hobbycraft! The stores strike me as very unorganised, too big and over priced - this is of course my opinion!

There are lot's of great online retailers for craft stuff!

It may be worth going of course to get some ideas and buy a few bits to try some ideas out!

Me and mil2b bought all the stuff to make my invites from Hobbycraft in Northampton (I live in Leicester so why I didn't think of going to the Nottingham one I don't know!!!!) and it was great. I had an idea about colours before we went and mil2b is a card crafter anyway so between us we came up with a design when we were there. They have a fantastic choice of colours of card/paper/envelopes etc and personally I find it hard to judge a true colour on the computer - I'd rather see it in the flesh. We bought some packs of pearlescent white cards and then some turquoise and acetate to do the designs on the front along with a stamp. We also bought acetates to do the inserts inside so it looked 'handmade rather than homemade' as mil2b puts it!

We spent about 2 hours in there choosing and there were lots of other brides doing the same thing, including 2 who asked mil2b for advice as she obviously knew what she was talking about!

If I can muster up some tech skills I'll try and post a picture of my invite.

If you have a local craft shop they would be a good place to start. Hobbycraft were charging 50p for an A4 sheet of brown card - whereas I got a whole box full for £5.99 or something from my local bead shop which does crafty bits.

Hoebbycraft woudl be good to buy a few things to do some trials etc then when you know exactly what you need order it online.

Personally I think that Hobbycraft is really over-priced. It's worth a look if you want ideas. But if you have a small, independent art or craftshop, I'd go there. That way at least you get to match items & colours up together in front of you.

My chief bridesmaid and I went to get some bits from Hobbycraft the other day. We were really surprised at the amount of choice that was there, we were expecting to spend 20 minutes in there but H2B came in after an hour complaining that the car was getting hot and we were taking too long lol. I'd definately say it's worth a look around even though some bits are a bit pricey.
