Anyone thought about ordering a dress from the US?

Twiglet girl, 24 June, 2008 at 11:02 Posted on Planning 0 10

I dont spend much time on WP these days, so ? everyone!

My friend who is getting married was asking whether it's a good idea to order her dress online from House of Brides or similar. It seems like it would be a really good saving - has anyone done this - or have you decided not to?

I said I would ask on here for her as there would bound to be some good advice!

? in advance

I ordered my dress from bridalonlinestores and they were great. I needed something in plus size and it wasnt an issue. There were pictures of previous brides and the actual dress totally reflects the picture. Helped me talk through sizes with the online help and then talked me through the ordering process. Paid in full by card and the dress arrived within 14 days. Have tried it on and only the bust needs a slight change, the waist and hips are perfect. It cost, with customs charges and delivery, £265 in total. The dress i saw in the UK similar cost £980. I would recommend them for anyone.

I was thinking about this, especially with the exchange rate being so high. Can you ask a dress maker to fit it afterwards?

Yes that is exactly what i have done. I contacted the dressmaker who fixed my sister in laws bridesmaids dresses and i have a fitting with her in a couple of weeks. If you order basically one size more than you are then there should only be small changes. Only thing to make sure you dont pick one with loads of detail, and a few sizes too big/small as the changes might be more difficult to make. I'm over the moon with mine.

Hmmm. May well bear this in mind. I was especially thinking about BMs which are less complicated dresses anyway.

I ordered my bridesmaid dresses from bestbridalprices.com and tbh after the charges at customs it came to pretty much the same if it had have been bought from the UK. The dresses were labelled as gifts but I think customs are getting wise to it now.

Got mine from http://www.weddingdressonline.com/ in the USA, pic here of me in it (sorry couldn't resist)

i was so pleased with it, it cost about £170, but had to pay £70 excise and duty when it came to the uk, didn't have to have it altered at all, but does have a corset back so could adjust it myself.

Oooh those clever buggurs! I was wondering about this, I thought there was a certain limit though, like £200 worth that you could bring in?

    Hi Twiglet girl,

I ordered my BM dresses from house of brides. It is a good saving, mine cost £80 each and over here they are £180, but I know I will have to pay some importing taxes but I know I will still make a saving. One thing against HOB is that you can never seem to get hold of them by phone which is frustrating, although the service by e mail is good. I ordered my dresses at the end of April and they are supposed to be arriving in the shop by mid July, and then they are going to ship them to me. The only thing with that is hoping they arrive in time, but if they do then I think its a great thing to order them online because of the savings. I have booked a lady to take the dresses in when they arrive and as someone else said make sure you order one size larger than you need as if they are too big they can be taken in, but too small & they are useless!!

Crafty Em......I cannot believe what a bargain your dress was, its gorgeous! xx

BE CAREFUL!!! A friend of mine ordered her wedding dress and 3 x bridesmaids and they never arrived, she paid in full for them and they simply didn't turn up and she couldn't get hold of the company (don't know which site it was, sorry) and another friend ordered a couple of bridesmaids dresses and once you add on the tax and shipping charges she pretty much paid UK price anyway. Just my experience xx
