Anyone used Pixmania?(ipod touch related)

AnnaBanana, 5 December, 2008 at 17:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I want an ipod touch for Christmas, and I have looked it up on the web. Pixmania are selling the 32GB (2nd generation, this is the brand new one right??) one for £259 + £5P&P.

Comet/PCWorld on the other hand are selling it for £282 and I can pick one up at a local store.

WWYD? with these things im usually hesitant to buy on the net in case I need to take it back etc, and also im slightly suspicious of why Pixmania are selling them cheaper, as ipods are usually a standard price everywhere?

Opinions appreciated!!

TIA

Personally, I'd pay the extra £18, just as I talked JK into letting me buy our digital SLR over the counter at Jessops instead of saving a tenner and buying it from an online firm I'd never heard of. I'm an iPod/iPhone veteran (I've owned four between the original 2001 release and my current iPhone), and I've never had one go wrong on me, but there's a first time for everything!

As for your second question, that does indeed seem to be the current model - there have been two generations of iPhone and iPod Touch apiece.

I wouldn't use them after the bastard who cloned my credit card spent over £5000 there. I think the bank might question whether I had been telling porkies on my declaration of fraud. ?

I used pixmania a couple of years ago for a p&s camera but the saving was pretty good. I think if the saving is minimal it isn't worth it if you have the option of buying from a physical store that you can go back to if there are problems, and certainly that was the option I took when buying an expensive camera a few months back.

I was thinking about buying from them, but I always research new places and they had a shoking amount of horror stories and bad reviews on the web - so i wouldn't risk it.

I used them. They're based in France so if you have any problems (like I did) it's a nightmare. You can't get hold of anyone on the phone, they don't respond to emails. When you do get a response they are fairly quick to deal with your issue but it takes so much longer than with someone like Amazon.

Wow, thanks everyone, sorry for the delay in replying. I will stay away from Pixmania then. I have reserved one at my local Comet for collection tomorrow, as you say, id rather pay a bit extra and know exactly where I have to go if it all goes the way of the pear. Im not sure I can wait another 20 days to open it though!! ?

Pixmania are owned by DSG - the same company that owns PC World.

We used Pixmania for the first and last time a year ago. Never, ever again - I've dealt with a lot of consumer complaints in the past (on behalf of relatives, etc), worked in jobs relating to customer-services/facing, and I simply cannot explain here the level of unprofessionalism experienced when dealing with this company.

I ordered a router from them, which arrived late and was faulty (dropping connections and its config settings; later we found out this particular model was infamous for this issue, bad luck but not Pixmania's fault). I arranged over the telephone for packaging to be sent to us so we could return the faulty item. This never arrived; phoning again, I was told to post it normally and include a receipt for the postage. I did this, and received a refund of the cost with (yet another) phone call to find out where the refund was, since I knew from the tracking tool online it had been received several weeks ago.

I then asked them about the postage costs for returning the item. I was told that it hadn't been inside the box. Knowing ths was wrong, I was really glad I'd kept my own receipt plus the switch receipt for the post office transaction - it wasn't cheap to send back - I emailed them the scanned in copy to the address given. Three times, the second and third times asking for confirmation of receipt. It never arrived, and I didn't get an automated read receipt either. I then phoned them again; this time I told them I'd fax it instead since no one ever appeared to check their emails (by this time I was getting impatient with them). I did this. I phoned back to ensure they had it. They did not. I faxed again, to the international number given. Then I phoned, and kept them on the phone whilst I did it. They simply kept insisting they didn't have the fax, and I even ended up testing the damn machine several times myself in case it was a fault our end.

Finally, I ended up on the call asking to speak to a manager or SOMEONE that could help, since the operators just kept insisting they needed proof of postage to refund money, and I kept sending it... the girl told me that there was no one there.

Taking a deep breath and trying to remain calm, I explained that I wanted to resolve this issue quickly and without hassle, but that the operators were going around in circles with me and sounded like robots because I had sent proof several times, they could even check the weight and the postage costs of Royal Mail if they wanted to online. The girl on the telephone used this as an excuse to start ranting about me being offensive to her "calling [her] a robot", and made as if she was going to cut the call off. At no time was I rude to her in my opinion, I know that shouting at people gets a customer nowhere easily. I explained to her that I've worked in many a call centre and if she was trying to use this vaguely offensive thing I'd said to end the call, it did not matter since I would then be in contact with Amazon instead.

I phoned Amazon Marketplace and got my full refund within the day. (I hadn't realised they had any decent form of reproach when buying items there.)

To which I got 3 phonecalls from Pixmania on my answer machine "to try and resolve the issue", one supposedly from a manager.

I'm sorry to post this massive long post, but over a year later I'm still seething at the complete idiots at that place, it was just a generally frustrating experience all around. I've no idea who they employ in their offices, but not a single person I spoke to seemed to give a crap about customer services, it was shocking.

As a final insult I left a rather nicer response on their feedback page than was the truth (simply mentioning that the item was faulty and there was an issue with speedy return), only for the seller to outright lie in their response to it that "the customer failed to work with us to resolve the issue" or something. Cnuts.
