Anyone's husband an electrician??

mrs.allym, 9 June, 2008 at 20:12 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Just bought and had delivered a new kitchen. Took the package of a gas hob, electric oven and chimney.

At present I have a gas oven, is it easy to convert from gas oven to electric oven, stupidly I thought it was a matter of plugging it in? but have been told that a lot of work might need to be done to connect to the mains, run cable from main electric box to kitchen ?.

Anyone help?

Thanks

My H is. I'll just pop out to the shed and ask him.

My OH is an electrical engineer. He thinks the following:

depends how far the fuse box is from the kitchen, what the walls are made of and if there is a spare "way" in the fuse box,

Expect to pay £250 plus to have someone do it for you. you will need certificates etc

    OK here goes:

He says it all depends on the wattage of the oven (how many Kilowatts - should say on the box). Under 3kw should be able to be plugged into the mains, but the kitchen would need to be on a ring circuit. He advises that you get an electrician in to check out your wiring. Lots of people assume that you need special wiring, but this is mainly the case for electric hobs, not ovens.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Oven is 2.4kw. Into the mains - do you mean straight into the wall??

He said then that this should be fine, as long as you make sure the kitchen is definately on a ring circuit, and you have your earthing checked.

By mains he does mean straight into the wall, but stresses you should get wiring checked first.

Will definitely get it checked - father-in-law was an electrician years ago and is coming to have a look. He said over the phone it would be a big job with running wires etc and just wanted to check if anyone knew.

Can you ask - what is a ring circuit?

Hi - it's a circuit that runs from the fuse box , around all of the sockets in the kitchen and then back to the fuse box.

Upstairs and downstairs are on different ring circuits and husband thinks the kitchen should be covered by the downstairs circuit.
