Apostrophe - Apprentice related

Maxi, 30 April, 2008 at 23:05 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

Have read The Apprentice thread, after watching the programme i'm confused!

My initial thoughts were Happy Single's Day. Being that it is a possession of a group of people.

But Happy Singles' Day denotes the same thing, doesn't it?

Please hitched, show me the right way.

I think single's would be singular and singles' plural......maybe?

Definitely Singles' Day. I was shouting at the tele at this point!

They should definitely had gone with a National Apostrophe Day!

It's singles', ie possession by a group of singles plural, because presumably the day is for all singles.

single's would be a day for one single

This would mean a day for a single. It's for a group of singles so the apostrophe comes after the s.

It should fall after the S but I'd actually leave it out altogether in order to be more accessible, like ?

    ?

Fuck em. If they're too stupid to understand it with an apostrophe present they don't deserve to breed.

    Ok, thank you all.

Happy Singles' Day just looked so wrong to me.

If in doubt, leave it out ?

No, because it might be a day that's about singles, rather than belonging to them. Like Valentines Day - is it a day belonging to St Valentine or for all valentines? I'd omit the apostrophe.

Hmmm. I suppose it could be. But I don't like it so it shouldn't be so ?

Miiiiiiiaaaaow!!! ? That is just plain mean.
But god they're all awful. I've interviewed for graduate programmes before, and none of them would get in even at that level.
Every week I want Suralan to say 'you know what? You're all dross - go on - shoooo'
I predict that future series will become a bit more Big Brother-y, with more footage from in the house, between the tasks.

It's St. Valentine's Day, just like St. George's Day or St. Patrick's Day or any other saint.

Singles' Day would be like Mothers' Day or Fathers' Day - a day which refers to a number of people and which therefore needs the plural placing of the apostrophe.

You don't say? ? I understand the grammar akcherloi, but I think it's debatable and given how uncomfortable most people are with the s' construction I'd be minded to omit it - I think it's arguably correct, and as I say, more accessible and catchier.

I like to think that if you put the apostrophe in the right place then people may learn by osmosis, and become more comfortable with the concept?
