April 2014 venue date dilemma!

missmccleary, 8 May, 2013 at 19:07 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hello... Very inexperienced bride to be! Engaged on Friday evening and the wedding train has well and truly set off!

I am a teacher so my dates are relatively restricted. We would like to get married the middle weekend of Easter next year - but the venues are either booked entirely (I had no idea!) or free but only on Friday or Sunday.

Our favourite venue is free Sunday 13th and would be perfect but I'm a little anxious about Sunday weddings with friends needing to take the Monday off - or not and leaving early - and the availability of registrars? I have made enquiries and am told someone will get back to me.

Another venue is free on 11th April which is a Friday. It's very similar and would be a lovely place to get married too. I know people would need to take the Friday off - but somehow I think they'd be more inclined to? I remember going to a wedding years ago before I became a teacher on a Thursday!

Any advice, thoughts much appreciated. Perhaps I'm over thinking the Sunday thing?

Friday and Sunday weddings are becoming very fashionable atm. I would go for Friday because like you say people would be more inclined to take the day off for the actual wedding than for the day after a wedding. Also be ready for the snotty....''only getting married on a friday because its cheaper'' comments that i have heard at previous weddings

    xx

Everyone's choosing whatever day these days so I don't think it matters too much. When we discussed it, we decided Sunday (or any day other than Fri & Sat) would mean some people wouldn't drink/wouldn't let their hair down because they might decide it's not worth booking the day off, where as on a Friday, they've still got the next day off and if they've got plenty of notice they'll be more than happy to take the day off. Friday and Saturday cost the same so we went for a Saturday in the end though. I've been to a couple of Friday weddings though and was more than happy to take a day off.

    Hello,

I'm a teacher too and I am also getting married next April. We are getting married on easter weekedend the Saturday. We booked it last year as I knew it would be a busy and popular time and us teachers unfortunately are very limited as to when we can go on holiday etc. We are now having our honeymoon in the summer holidays but that gives us something to look forward to once our wedding has been and gone : (

I went to a wedding receotion on friday which was good actually, I think most people would rather take the Friday off then the Monday.

Hello! We have gone for a Sunday but that's because it's a bank holiday weekend. I don't really think the Friday or Sunday would make much difference to me as a guest, I've been to weddings on both days and enjoyed both :-)

Thank you for advice! I have that sense that a Friday would be better, even though I know these days there is more flexibility/non-Saturday weddings.

I am waiting to hear back from registrar so that might make decision for me!

Lonely other option is 22nd feb at one of the venues but that seems a) quite soon! And b) a bit chilly? Plus work again on the Monday!

It's such a minefield! I hope things work out as I do believe these things are meant to be....

We had a similar dilemma, we had our venue set in our minds but they were fully booked on every Saturday in April, we toyed with the idea of a Sunday wedding so that most people would have the day off already but decided that most people would prefer to have the weekend to recover from the shenanigans so we went for Friday instead. We have given them a years notice to arrange any necessary requests for annual leave so hopefully it wont cause too many upsets.

I seem to have quite a few teacher brides and they book any days in the holidays so I don't think it matters too much now. Friday would be good though as it will be an early start to the weekend!

What a week! We have eventually settled on Good Friday and have today booked the registrar and confirmed the original venue we had hoped for!

Bit of a curveball but I am actually delighted with the date (we're thinking of not Good Friday... Great Friday for save the date cards!).

Thank you for advice, who knew marrying the man of your dreams could be so stressful! X

I'm getting married on a Sunday in June next year... As a child this is the day everyone got married and I find any other day really strange.

glad you've managed to settle on a date.

I've gone for a Friday wedding (as the date we wanted happened to fall on a Friday).

Everyone I've spoken to is looking forward to a long weekend off work and I haven't heard a single negative comment.

Personally I'd go for a Friday over a sunday if I were you as most guests will then have 2 days to recover!

I’m a teacher too and had such a ‘mare with dates! We didn’t want to get married in the summer so we had to choose from Christmas, Feb Half Term and Easter (Autumn half term 2013 was too soon!). I was all set for Easter but having a church wedding was also very important and our vicar threw a spanner in the works by telling us she couldn’t do any Easter break weekends because of other commitments. We absolutely had to have a Saturday because of a large number of guests will need to travel a long way and stay so we didn’t want to make it awkward for non-teacher friends and family having to book multiple days off work.

Christmas was ruled out because of similar reasons with it being a busy time of year for the vicar AND guests as it’s a very family orientated time of year plus a slightly selfish reason on my part that I didn’t want to share my wedding anniversaries with Christmas/New Year celebrations!

That left us with Feb 22nd 2014 half term – slightly unusual choice and as you pointed out – chilly! but I’m really happy with my date and the deals we are able to get not being “peak season”. I’ve been to quite a few winter weddings and they can be lovely as long as the venue is warm and church heated (which we have covered!)

We’ve gone for the end of the half term so we can have the week run up for last second things then Honeymoon during the Easter break. Sat 22/02 lots of 2s so hopefully neither of us will forget anniversaries ? Your point about back-to-work on Monday is a fair one though, I work PT so I’m off Mon & Tues and OH has booked those two extra days off as well – I wouldn’t have been so keen if I had to go straight back to work on the Monday!

I’m really glad you have sorted a date you are happy with now! Now the exciting bit can begin xx

Another teacher bride to be here, I'm having a Friday to due to venue a Avalibility, but mine is in the middle of summer hols, 4 weeks off before and 2 weeks off after. I'm planning on doing all my setting up in the first week off so that I don't have to go in at all after honeymoon. All our guests were fine with the Friday and the only comments we got were 'what a lovely excuse for a long weekend :-)

I'm a teacher too and getting married in the Easter hols but on a Tuesday. I did initially worry about having a week day but most of my friends work in education too and thought as long as I give out enough notice to everyone it will be fine. It's also great because we have got loads of mid-week discounts. Definately worth considering.
