Are fascinators 'out'?

Redbedhead, 3 June, 2008 at 13:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

I have 3 weddings to go to this year and luckily (for my finances!) am going to be able to buy 1 outfit plus headgear for the lot. 2 of the weddings are in the UK and 1 is in Italy.

I was thinking of getting a fascinator rather than a hat as I figured it would travel better to Italy plus I wouldn't get so hot when wearing it but are they now terribly 'out'?

I really hope not!!! I've just paid £80 for a bespoke one for a family wedding!! I decided not to go for a hat as the mother of the bride is only wearing a fascinator and the only hats I suit are wide-brimmed "statement" type hats. I didn't want to stick out like a sore thumb so thought I would go for the subtle approach with a fascinator instead.

You can get some really funky fascinators - there are lots of places online that will match to your outfit (though some of them aren't cheap as you can see from the price I paid!)

I wore one on Saturday to a wedding and there were still quite a lot of other people wearing them. It was a fairly 'young' wedding as well.

As far as I'm aware nobody pointed at me and threatened to call the fashion police ? TBH I do love a great big sexy hat, but I couldn't find one that went with my dress and this fascinator did.

    I wouldn't say so.

I don't think it's the sort of thing that follows fashion in that way- I know there was a patch where they were hugely popular but they've always been around and always will be. It's a bit like when everyone started putting sundried tomatoes into everything about ten years ago. I would wear one with no qualms at all- I know people on Hitched are sometimes sniffy about them but that comes from spending too long on a wedding website and therefore finding them old hat (ahem ?) whereas all normal people wouldn't have a view one way or the other.

Well I'm wearing one for racing his weekend (Derby) huge plume of lime green & black for Friday & a Hat for Saturday as it's Royal Encl.

Then I have a very similar to the style Camila wears for Ascot, in teal & grey, with a bit of black.

There were quite a few in evidence at the recent royal wedding, so I would think they must still be ok.

My mum is wearing one to my wedding this august, i've said that hats are not necessary as i feel that they're a bit more formal. Fascinators are lovely.
