Are wedding dresses flattering?

Princess Bride 2013, 22 January, 2014 at 09:56 Posted on Planning 0 20

Yesterday I tried on a few dresses for the first time and I have to say I came away feeling disappointed. I felt like they added inches to me and made me look bigger than I was, the way I felt just wasn't what I expected at all. Are wedding dresses actually flattering?

It depends on your shape, I'd suggest trying on lots of different styles to find which one suits you best. The staff in the shops should have a good idea of what should flatter you best. Mine is a mermaid and is extremely flattering, but wouldnt suit everyone

I think it just means you haven't found the right one yet.

Like others have said, don't give up. Keep trying on all sorts of shapes and styles. You can never tell what type is going to suit you.

My dress is flattering .. However i do feel slighly bigger in it, but i think that is down to the fact the dress is such thick lace. I told my mum how i felt it made me look bigger and by the expression on her face i could tell she thought i was mad ha.

It does depend in style though, my dress is very figure hugging. Keep looking.

Definitely depends on your shape. I found that some of them weren't that flattering and I was disappointed as I had picked the styles that I thought would suit my body shape. Then I tried on some styles that I thought would make my hips look huge but they made me feel amazing as they accentuated my small waist.

Try on lots of styles - even if you don't think they will suit you.

I also found that some shops didn't have a good range of sizes and it's hard to tell if a dress would be flattering if it's too small or too big. I ended up getting mine from a shop that had lots of dresses close to my size (12/14).

Depends on you and the dress... personally I find A-line horribly unflattering despite it being the most common and popular cut

I think size is a big thing though are you a 4-8, 10-14, 16+ as at these different sizes you will usually suit different cuts

example: if your an 8 then A-line or ballgown can often make you look bigger due to the use of lots of extra fabric, where as something less structured (like a simple chiffon empire waist column dress) can be quite flattering - this however would probably work in reverse for a size 16 bride who may require more structure in her dress

also body shape plays a big part too at any size

Did you try some proper corset backed ones?

I would keep looking and keep an open mind about styles - try lots on, even ones you don't think you'd like. So many brides end up with a dress nothing like they thought they would.

Everyone agreed that the mermaid was best, however it made me look inches bigger all over. All the dresses were very thick lace, felt swapped in them, despite the dress being the right size. Have you got a pic of your dress on here? x

Carry on looking and you'll find one that suits you and flatter you. Shopping for wedding dresses is different to normal clothes shopping as usually the sample dresses are in only 1 or 2 sizes, so a lot of brides to be are trying on the wrong size.

i found dress shopping a horrendous experience - as a larger bride I was limited to what was available for me to try. There were plenty of dresses I tried that had something I didn't like about them - some made me feel my hips were huge, ones with lots of sparkle on the bust made me feel really self conscious. Even dresses that appear to be very similar fits can make you feel different in them, so don't give up.

Forgot to say, for me, the corset backs pulled me in, and a-line from above the waist was most flattering. The mermaid style dresses hugged my hips too much and made me feel huge.

Everyone was saying that the mermaid style was the one and I didn't like it at all, it didn't do my figure any favours, made me look bigger. I keep looking at the pictures they took and cant believe that they actually thought it looked that great it was the 'one'. It maybe didn't help that I didn't pick a single dress, my future SIL was picking the ones she thought would look best on me and bringing them to the changing rooms for me to try. It was all a bit overwhelming. I will take my mum next time x

I think you just need to try more on. There's no limit to the amount of shops you can go to as long as you have the time.

It is a lot more figure hugging than it looks in the photo

Definitely try more on, it really depends on your shape, mermaid style dresses looked horrendous on me but I've seen some girls looking amazing in them

Firstly, you've only been once so don't worry that you haven't found the right dress. I went to about ten shops! Secondly, choose dresses yourself that you like rather than your sil, and let the shops ladies help. If its a good enough shop they will find a dress that suits you.

Not all styles will suit you, maybe mermaid dresses aren't for you, they don't suit everyone. Don't forget that dresses in pictures look really different to real life. I agree about trying a corset back as they will pull you in.

Try some different shops and see. Just because other people think a dress is the one means nothing. You have to think its the one as you're the one wearing it! Don't let other people sway your decision. And if you do find a dress you love, go back another day and try it again to be sure. You'll get there, it might just take time.

Agree with lots of the above advice, especially about going to a shop where the assistants really know their stuff. Mine asked me about my venues, wanted to see photos etc, style of wedding... it meant she wasn't just choosing a dress to suit me but one that would suit my venue too. She also knew which dresses would show off the bits of my body that I like! The dress I've got is probably not one I'd have chosen myself... but I love it!

Its the white, white is highly reflective and bounce light away rather than absorb it like most other colours do, thats why white can make you look bigger. To combat this the dress needs to be perfect for your body shape. I'm a pear so empire and a-lines suit me quite well etc. Also your posture makes a big difference when wearing these dresses, standing straight on can make you look bigger than you are.

You can get other colours that still look bridal, too. Mine was a soft coffee colour, Flow's was a very pale pink. I also tried on some platinum coloured ones. All of my favourites (on me) were ones that had a subtle colour to them.

I went dress shopping a couple of weeks ago. Before I set out I had a clear idea about the sort of dress I wanted (tea length, possibly 1950s style, not too glitzy or 'formal'), and had one particular dress I had fallen in love with after seeing it on the internet. Once I tried it on, I looked hideous Smiley smile The dress I ended up with was nothing like I had planned to get (full length with train and lots of detail) but it was very flattering and felt wonderful on. Just keep trying lots of 'wild cards' and you'll know when you've found something that you feel good in. Best of luck!
