Are you having a toastmaster?

loobylou1979, 10 August, 2010 at 20:43 Posted on Planning 0 19

My BIL2B (who will be best man) has a toastmaster friend who has offered to do our wedding day for a minimal fee. We’re really undecided on whether to accept his kind offer. Have you considered having one? What were your reasons for/against choosing to have one?

We’re unsure whether it would be too formal (we’ve been to several weddings, none of which had one), or whether it would remove some of the stresses of the day.

Our venue offered one but we have decided that the BM can do it and he wont cost us any extra!

as far as I can remember from weddings that have had them (Please correct me if im wrong!) the announce the bride & groom entering the wedding breckfast, then introduce the speach makers.

if you have a some one who is happy to do this or even when one person has finished their speac to introduce the next person, you may save a few pennies!

Hi, we really wanted to have one as we recently went to a wedding with one and he really helped the day flow, and cracked quite a few jokes too! We've decided against it purely for budget reasons, as its not a necessity, just a nice to have. If we can afford it nearer the time I might change my mind as I felt like he was managing the day!

It is a useful addition to the day, especially if your venue aren't going to be very forwards when it comes to getting guests in for their meals, or announcing cutting of the cake / speeches etc.

    Yeah we are having http://www.iamengaged.co.uk/uploads/Barry_Sims_-_Professional_Toastmaster/Barry_Sims_-_Professional_Toastmaster.php

although our venue also offered the service from the host which apparently they recommend but thought I would get a professional just in case.

We're having a master of ceremonies, which is kind of the same thing. My brother will be doing this for us, he's in the Army so bossy enough to get things done! His main duties will be assisting the usher and photographer(rounding people up etc), annoucning us as the bride and groom and announcing each speach.

This sounds really good - I didn't even know something like this existed! How much can you expect to pay for a professional toastmaster?

Yes we're having one. But it was included in the package. If it wasn't included i think we'd prob just use the best man or something. But i think it would be nice to take your friend up on the offer, might work out cheaper too!

We aren't having an offical one but our caterer offers a master of ceramony type service and so does the coordinator of our reception venue. They essentially ensure the day flows get people to sit down for dinner announce us into the room etc etc

In additiion to this our reception coordinator checked who are photographer was as she said some have a tendcy to forget bride and groom have guests and so sometimes she has to intervine to call a halt to over running photo sessions 9luckily she knows ours and sayas this won't be a problem) She has also aarranged for us to get ten min to ourselves while the guests are being seated for dinner (we aren't having a recieving line). Are caterig manager for the day is also fantastic and has checked lots of little details we wouldn't have thought of. I think if you can have someone be it a trustworty friend or a professional it is worth while as it means you can just enjoy the day without stressin gover the small details

A couple of the venues we're looking at include this in their packages, so it's a maybe for us just now. We really wanted to keep things as informal as possible though so we'd both rather just have the Best (wo)man* do it.

*yep, h2b asked his best friend to be Best Man, except she's a girl, so we're having a Best Woman instead :-D Maybe I should find myself some bridesmen to even things out??

My OH's minister is going to do "Master of Ceremonies" for us. I think its a nice way of doing it, but I would try and get someone involved who is a guest already possibly! that way, if you eel like it, cou can give them a small gift for the hassle! Had my OH's minister not have been fussed on doing it, my brother (an usher) would have. He works in PR and is a good talker. The BM was not fussed on the idea.

There is often some confusion over toastmaster/ master of ceremonies. They are very different. An official toastmaster will be dressed in red coat, white gloves etc and conduct the procedings traditionally and formally. A master of ceremonies covers the same duties but less formally, without the pomp and circumstande, and tend to make it more personal. Around NI a lot of the venues offer a master of ceremonies as part of the package....but unfortunately all it equates to is the function manager making a few rushed announcements inbetween organising his staff! It is also true that much of their role is behind the scenes such as co ordinating with suppliers, directing guests etc..... but it all goes towards helping the day flow better and taking any stress away from yourselves.

We're having a good friend be ours as we wanted to include him in the wedding and thought it would be nice to ask him to do that. Plus it will be cheap i.e. one extra suit to hire!

We are having one, but only because it is included in the package. I wouldn't of bothered otherwise.

Not exactly what they will be doing on the day? Will find out when we go for our final details appointment next week.
