Are you having your first dance all to yourself?

mrscaira2b, 5 November, 2013 at 22:50 Posted on Planning 0 10

I hadn't even thought about this until tonight. My future MIL asked us what our first dance song will be so that she can practise dancing... and I said "why, you wont be dancing to it?"

My other half and I are having dance lessons to our first dance song so I don't really want other people coming up onto the dance floor half way through our song...

We had planned on having a second dance where the bridal party and parents get up...

Am I totally unreasonable for expecting our first dance to be all ours?

If that's how you want it then not unreasonable at all

We'll be having everyone join in halfway as we're not really comfortable with everyone just gawping at us. OH is not one for dancing anyway!

No your first dance is all yours if you want it to be - traditionally with bride and groom on their own, or if a bit nervous get your DJ to invite other guests to join you part way through. If having guests join you part way through make sure the flash mob know about it.

If having no father daughter - mother son dances after your first dance, it might be a good idea to specify want you want your second song to be and let MIL know so she can practice for that song - the MIL might be nervous about getting gangnam style dance wrong!

We will be having bridal party and guest join us halfway through!

Cant think if anything worse than have everyone look at us while we dance through an entire song!

i find first dances pretty boring after the first 30secs, unless some fancy footwork is included more than bride and groom swaying in middle if dance floor!

its entirely up to you and what you are comfortable with!

At a recent friends wedding, all the bridesmaids and close family members started dancing after about 20 seconds of the first dance.

I was outraged for the bride and groom but the friends I was with thought it was normal and the couple didn't seem to mind/notice.

I want our first dance to be just ours, its only 3 mins, but i think OH might have a breakdown if he has anymore attention on him that day.

It's up to you. I'll be asking our guests to join in half way through to take the pressure off us a bit.

Thanks for your replies! If we weren't getting the dancing lessons then I would be all for everyone coming up and joining us! Ive always found first dances boring too...but that was why we decided to have a choreographed dance to our chosen song! So that we do entertain people and don't bore them lol!

We had definitely planned on letting everyone know what the 2nd song was so that they can practise if they want!

Our song is only 2 and a half minutes long so I think id like it to be just us!

When we play a wedding evening reception, we ask the bride and groom if they would like us to invited guests onto the dance floor. If they do then this gives it a nice structure and usually people really love being invited to dance floor. We then pick it up with an uplifiting song straight afterwards to keep the dance floor jumping!

If the couple dont want family to join its usually because they have planned an amazing dance, and we then dont invite people to join Smiley smile

Think we will have it all to ourselves. Probably the only point in the that you will get him all to yourself lol. It will be awkward as we are only having a small wedding and OH will want to die inside at the thought of it but im hoping once we are up there we wont mind.

My OH mentioned us getting everyone else on the floor half way through the dance as he can think of nothing worse that us swaying for an entire song as he isnt much of a dancer. I dismissed it at first as i felt it again would be one of the only times we can be "alone" on the wedding day apart from in the car. but it does sound a good idea opening the floor to other guests for the first dance then second dance another nice song! we getting married in March and still dont have a song! had some laughs at the list of first dances on hitched!
