Argh!!!!

BustyB, 4 May, 2011 at 10:28 Posted on Planning 0 132

Sorry just a ranty post!

I emailed a dress shop (for those of you that dont know im not having a traditional wedding dress, im having a 50s one) and asked what size there sample dresses are as im a size 16. And she said the sample dresses are 8s and 10s. Oh great! Why if the national average is a size 16 would you not hold any bigger sizes?!

I dont want to buy a dress based purely on the fact it looks nice, I want it to look nice on me! Smiley sad

Sorry for moaning

    That sounds a lot rubbish!

Did they not have any biggers sizes for you to try even if they weren't wedding dresses?

Nopes they only carry 'standard sizes' in all dresses. Argh!

Hmm, just because the national average might be a 16 (mean), that doesn't mean that more women are a 16 than any other size (mode). I don't know if the mode differs from the mean, just a thought about skewed statistics...

If the national average is a 16, then that means that people are bigger than a 10! So they should stock sizes over a 10. Just my opinion!

Hmm, it means, for sure, that SOME people are bigger than a 10.

If a dress shop has to pick one size to cater for three women, two size 10s and a size 16, which size will it stock? The mean size is a size 12 but that's not helping anyone....The mode size, the category that is most frequent, is a 10, so surely they pick this?

I'm not doing anything other than musing on this topic. I work with stats a lot and the word "average" has several meanings. I'm wondering if the tabloid claim that "size 16 is average" means that more women are a size 16 than any other size or that the division of total size/total women gives a size 16, when actually this is not the category that most women fit into. I don't know what the mode size in the UK is.

God, I'm boring myself now Smiley smile

The national average size may be a 16, but this covers all women of all ages and times of life, including people like my mum who was nowhere near the size she is now when she got married - I would imagine that the national average bride size is smaller as most brides (and I'm not trying to start anything off here) go on some kind of monster diet to be the smallest they could possibly be on their wedding day.

I'm currently a flabby size 14 but will be working hard to make sure I'm much less flabby and at least a solid size 12.

But that's just my thinking, I have body issues in general and would hate all of my wedding photos to show me as I am now. ☹️

I am a size 16/18 and the sample of my wedding dress was a size 10. They held it up to me and I just knew it was the one for me. It was a 50s style too. What designers/ styles are you looking at? I did try a few on that were a size 12/14 and they just filled in the gap @ the back with calico.

I am going to run for cover after this comment:

Do you think that making larger clothes more difficult to obtain might help bigger girls realise that it might be healthy for them to drop a few pounds....? Shops don't stock below a 6/8, presumably because that's not a healthy image to promote?

Not really. If larger clothes weren't available you'd just see lots of naked sturdy people.

    Lol! Love it! Smiley laugh

And I would like to point out that just because someone is a size 8/10 that doesnt mean they are healthy, and just because someone is a size 16 doesnt mean they are unhealthy !

Well, I definitely agree with the first part of that. I suspect "thin" people assume that they don't need to do as much aerobic exercise as others (viewing aerobic exercise as a means to lose weight, not as a fitness goal in its own right). However, I'd be less emphatic about the second part. While a "fat" person can be aerobically fit, they will, without doubt, be healthier if they were thinner.

And lol at Spangles - might a load of naked "sturdy" women provide an incentive in itself (like the hotdog-face-stuffing thread the other day).

And to get this out of the way (as I may have a slight reputation for erm, outspokeness), I am not in any way attacking any person at all (and I DO think it's quite rubbish that shops don't stock a range of sizes)- I am talking generally from a medical POV. Using words "fat" or "thin" are easier than finding the euphemisms - there is no spite behind those words.

ETA: Ah, I see KV has rocked up with the old "popcorn" comment. Sorry to disappoint you but amazingly, I think it's possible for people to discuss sensitive/potentially minefield-laden issues without getting bitchy ?

I a fatty myself I can't see how not providing clothes for fat people would be helpful. I agree being fat is not healthy - everyone knows this. However to deprive people of clothes is ridiculous. I would also disagree with not providing clothes for smaller sizes too. I have friends who are size 6/8 and they try damn hard to put on weight to no avail. You also haven't considered the impact of this idea FTLOMB. Think of the tent shortages.

Im a size 8 and found it difficult to try on wedding dresses in my size so the ones I did try on were far too big and had to be held at the back with clips to see what they would look like.. so its not all about size 16's + that have difficulties with trying on clothes you know!!

Fully appreciate that. Hope this thread doesn't turn into a fat v thin war again. My mates who are slimmer (as mentioned) do suffer when buying clothes. I do however think it would be difficult for wedding shops to have samples to please everyone's requirements. They wouldn't have the room for starters.

Right I would like to point out that when I posted this topic it was a ranty moany comment and didnt need to be commented on. I am not in the mood to have a discussion about people saying that size 16 is fat and size 8 is thin. I couldnt care less what size people are. And KBS I wasnt saying that its only hard for size 16 + , I was saying that shops should carry a selection of sizes rather than just one or two.

We're merely having a healthy debate BB. I don't believe any of it is offensive, more of a musing. As I previously said, I am a size 16/18 and bought a 1950s style dress despite not being the conventional "ideal bridal size". The discussion that has evolved since then is just a bit of banter.

I beg your pardon?! I hate how this is turning into a fat vs thin topic when thats not how it was meant or the reason it was started. Call me sensitive if you want, I dont care Smiley smile

Of course it will get bitchy. There have been a lot of heated debates on these forums recently. Most of which have started out innocent enough. I don't tend to join in, but I do like to read them.

Im not angry or upset, I was just pointing out that the fat vs thin thing is not how I meant this topic to go on. I think the problem is that when reading things on here you cant tell how it was said, does that make sense?

I would definately see myself as the latter - Im a size 14 on top , 12 /14 on the bottom & at 5.3" im overweight. Another 7lb & I'll be within a healthy BMI (albeit the top section).

Ive been a regular gym goer for 8 years - doing 3/4 exercise classes a week. And I do consider myself to be quite fit. But I ony have to watch 'supersize superskinny' to see the impact of the extra fat on my body. Doesnt always stop me reaching for the chocolate but hey ho!

With regards to the OP - i got to try on my dress in a 14 so I could really see myself in it as opposed to 'imagine' and yes it helped. However, I also loved another dress which was 2 sizes smaller - i felt my boobs were too out there in it. Maybe if it had of been in my size & given me a true reflection that shop may have got my business. But it was, IMO, too big a risk to take.

What is a "smudgy" size 10? That sounds far more interesting than being a "size 10", which is how I describe it*
