Sorry just a ranty post!

I emailed a dress shop (for those of you that dont know im not having a traditional wedding dress, im having a 50s one) and asked what size there sample dresses are as im a size 16. And she said the sample dresses are 8s and 10s. Oh great! Why if the national average is a size 16 would you not hold any bigger sizes?!

I dont want to buy a dress based purely on the fact it looks nice, I want it to look nice on me! Smiley sad

Sorry for moaning

Oh and FTLOMB, regardless of whether your opinion on what sizes bridal shops stock, you must surely see that posting the suggestion that larger sizes should not be stocked so that fat people know it is unhealthy* is rather provocative?*

*I am paraphrasing, but that was the gist of what you said.

What you are saying I said:

    What I said:

Do you think that making larger clothes more difficult to obtain might help bigger girls realise that it might be healthy for them to drop a few pounds....?

When I was looking for my BM dresses, the girl that fitted in every dress amazingly and was obviously made for bridal shops was my lovely size 12-14 SIL.

Not my lovely size 8 CBM or my lovely size 16 SIL2B...

And my sample dress (which I've bought) fir me perfectly. So in Norfolk, you obviously need to be a size 12-14 to fit into bridal or BM dresses!

However, like Trickers has said, the ladies in the shops know how to deal with these issues and you'll still know if the dress is "your dress"! That's what they're there for ?

I think the Outdoor Shop still has some items left if you're quick. You look more like a one manner. I had to buy ruddy marquees.

I'm sure you're grown up enough to understand how important a turn of phrase can be. Smiley smile

I never asserted that which you suggested - that shop SHOULD NOT stock clothes to force fat people to realise it's unhealthy. I WONDERED if the unavailbility of larger sizes had ever made anyone think about losing weight.

Thank you Smiley smile , Im not sure the shop assistants will know what to do with my boobs though lol. I dont think a size 10 dress would fit over one boob Smiley surprise

But I will wait and see! Its a shame dress shops dont have more variety in sizes though but like someone earlier said it would cost them more in dresses and space to put them. Hay ho!

I had to physically sit on my hands to stop my fury erupting onto the hotdog-face-stuffing thread.....

How's this for provocative? In my world (fortunately for many, an imaginary one that will never become reality), KFC and McDonals are banned....

Yes, of course turn of phrase matters, but that was how I read your comment...

Now look at this, I didn't even mean to join in this one.

All I am saying is that I thought your comment was provocative and I personally wouldn't have written it, but that's me. That was why I made the popcorn comment (i.e. I thought, "people aren't going to like this").

    Love this, I'm smudgy too!

Last year, the reason I joined Slimming World was 'cos I couldn't buy jeans in Topshop any more as I was too fat to fit into any of them. It was a definite incentive. I'm seasonal though, much skinnier in summer than I am in winter, I range between an 8-10 and a 12-14 usually! Here's hoping I get to my summer weight before my wedding!

As acknowledged by my intro: I'm going to run and hide after this (or something like that) Smiley smile

I don't really have a problem with being provocative - it's always good to have a right old chew of a topic and if I can be part of getting to the meat of an issue, well, that's fine by me. But provoking out of distaste/hate is not at all what I was doing. I find it strange - although admittedly hampered by the internet and the inability for people to see your face when you "say" something - that the normal assumption would be maybe that provocation comes from bad feeling (as that wouldn't be my natural assumption).

I just dont really understand why you wrote it? Obviously you wanted to get a reaction out of myself and others. And then I got comments for being 'sensitive' because this was being turned into a fat vs thin topic which like i have said before I didnt want it to turn into. I understand that without the ability to see each others faces you cant really understand what people mean, but I think it was pretty obvious what you meant from your comment.

Crikey, the reason I mentioned any of this was that you made some comment about my repitition of the oft-used phrase regarding popcorn. You wrote what you wrote, I thought, "ooh this could get a bit heated" then you insinuated that my comment was misplaced and that there would be no bitching... even though you said that you may have to run off and hide.

Ironically enough, the only debating that seems to be ocurring is this debate about whether or not you were starting a heated debate.

I think I have confused myself there. Wouldn't be the first time.

I was hoping to get an ANSWER from people, not a REACTION. I was simply wondering, and went to specific lengths to clarify that I wasn't directing any comments at anyone, just talking generally, and that my comments were from a medical POV. If you wish to extrapolate from that, I can't stop you. You are free to make whatever assumptions you choose. But they are that, assumptions.

I've already agreed with you that shops should stock a range of sizes.

My dress shop samples (well, certainly of the range I was trying on) were all size 10. I wonder what makes the shift between shops?
