I dont want to buy a dress based purely on the fact it looks nice, I want it to look nice on me! Smiley sad

Sorry for moaning

I am a blurry 14-16 but the sample I tried on was a 12 and somehow fitted perfectly. I ended up ordering it in a 13 as I needed a tiny bit of extra length. Yet in other shops I tried on 12s and 14s that were too tight.

It's the same in regular shops though - for e.g. in Topshop a 16 trousers won't fit, whereas in Next a 14 is perfect and DPs a 16 is just right. At least they usually have other sizes to try.

Maybe bridal shops know their sizes aren't 'true' sizes so just take whatever has been the cheapest to buy in OR has been the most popular size they have had bought from them in the previous year or something. Due to the huge volume of some of the dresses I understand why they can't really stock more than 1 size per dress, but I agree they could do with a wider range of sizes in the shop itself.

Oi FTLOMB, I am a chunky size 14/16 and NEVER EVER EVER eat McDs or KFC. They are banned in my world too. Doesn't stop me being a greedy porker though! (Albeit with a sluggish thyroid gland and post-menopausal flab!)

I am not offended by anything in this thread. Either I'm slacking or you lot are...!

Just wanted to make the point (which is probably completely irrelevant to the topic above) but I am a size 14-16 but am also 5 foot 10 so manage to have a healthy BMI whereas you can be a size 10/12 and be 5 ft and have an 'overweight' BMI so I don't think size can really be an indication of how healthy someone is. Personally I think I would look really silly if I was a size 8 (no only because of my height but my build to...no offence meant to any 5ft10 size 8 brides) so would be really sad if they stopped making clothes in my size and had to wear tents...though the zebra does look like an attractive prospect...?

Ok, this thread has made me feel a bit tubs.

I am a 16-18 but only 5'1 and I know I need to lose weight, I am trying just now but with OH offshore I just can't be bothered to eat properly or do much. Bad I know. I have lost about 14kg since I moved up here without trying so I am trying harder now and hope to be a 14 by the time we get married. I think OH has lost the 14kg I have lost!!??

When I get my dress I think it will have to be made to measure as my boobies are huge (36HH) and my hips are big too, and I have a smaller tho flabby waist.

I am going to go and eat pesto off a spoon now.

    Definetly agree with that!

I keep thinking I have over a year to go so I will be fine, but on the other hand I tend to lose weight easier in the Summer than the Winter so I really should try now...........Smiley sad

And sizes in bridal shops are just the same of that as is the high street- Sunday saw me try on a size 6 top that was a bit big and then a 12 dress that I couldnt breathe in once I had zipped it up [with help] IRL I am a 10.

This was in the same bloomin shop too!

Ladies eat what you want- life is too bloomin short- word of advice though, dont buy Chunky Hummous- its vile.

I am a big fan of hummus of all flavours. However, the prospect of chunky hummus isn't doing it for me. No idea why. Also, does anyway know how to spell hummus properly? I change mind everytime I write it, which admittedly isn't often.

Spangles, I bloody love you for the naked sturdy people remark ?

HOW many times before have we said that although it would be laaaarvely to go try on all the wedding dresses in our ACKSHEWAL sizes and ready tailored to our precise body measurements (alright, the second bit is a little far-fetched), it's just not practical for dress shops to buy in samples of more than one size. If they did, they'd have to dramatically reduce their overall range and thus the selection of dresses in each store would be rubbish.

You want bigger dresses - go to a plus size dress shop. That's what I did because, quite frankly, the thought of trying to squeeze my then-size 18 lardy bum into a size 12 sample made me cry inside. I had a wonderful time at a plus-size store, tried on about 20 dresses (which were all miles too big for me and made me feel MUCH better!) and found The One. Job done.

p.s. the whole 'average woman is a size 16' thing is nonsense. The range of weights among UK women is just huge; I've seen more size 6s and 8s, and sizes 24+ than I have actual size 16s. Off the top of my head, I know maybe half a dozen size 14 - 18 girls. The rest are all 8 - 12 or size 20+, but if you took an average of all our sizes, it'd probably even out at a 16. Possibly even an 18 or 20.

I meant that girls are all different sizes so by only having size 8 and 10s means then any bigger sized girls wont fit in them.

I did point out in the begining that my dress isnt a traditional dress, it is 50s style un weddingy dress . I also have huge boobies so there is no way that I will squeeze them into a small dress, no matter how magical the shop assistants are lol.

I did think about going to a Plus size bridal shop, but as I dont want a traditional bridal dress I thought there was no point

Yes, but it's just impractical for a shop to stock the same dress in several different sizes because of the cost of just one sample. The size with the highest frequency is a size 10 or 12, so naturally the shops cater to that demand. Makes perfect sense to me (as a former size 18).

Pesto hummus is amazing- I'm also a lemon and corriander fan (asda)

Anyhoo as well as the hummus discussion thought i'd say my piece re dress sizes.......

Firstly, 'sample sizes' in most other fashion area's are small sizes- wedding dress shops tend to be the exception so if the shop you tried was less bridal/more general fashion this may explain it. Also as most people have found you're never really one size as it varies from shop to shop, styles of clothes, material etc etc. bottom line it's hard to find the perfect fit!!

However, when it comes to wedding dresses, even if you are unable to see the dress fit you perfectly chances are you will have a pretty good idea whether it's something you would like- if it is there are ways and means to make things 'fit'- I tried on a size 8 dress and from the front it looked like it was made for me (the back was a whole other story) and I'm a size 12 with a rather blessed chect (34G)- I wouldn't write the shop off until you go and have a look- you never know!

Took me a long time to read but finally got to the end of this thread!! Its interesting how many different opinions there are on things, especially on hitched haha!! Can see everyones points of view but just wanted to add my little say... ?

I'm 5''7 and a size 8-10 but tiny on top in the breasticle area! Had to try dresses in a size 16 which was annoying, a wedding dress is the most expensive item of clothing a lot of us will ever buy and to not know what it will look like when it arrives is awful! But it is also realistic, with the storage costs, dead stock element, blah blah!! Whats worrying me more though personally is I haven't seen a dress in the colour I'm ordering, argh!! However, I also tried a 12 and while its nearer my size, its still not my size so not much use if you know what I mean! But oh well, thats the way it is unfortunately!

I was pulled in with those bulldog(!) clips and I could see almost exactly what the front will look like so I'm happy about that, but the back looked a little dodgy! Just wanna see my dress now...

Ps. To get in on the 'fat v thin' debate that is (not) going on... I may be a slim and relatively toned size 8, but I am probably one of the unhealthiest people I know. I live on pasta, crisps, McDonalds, and easter eggs at the moment! I don 't exercise and think that at the moment its a combination of genes and luck keeping me this way. Now I know I'm not big or clever haha, just wanted to say that there are slimmer unhealthy and healthy women, just as there are larger healthy and unhealthy women!

So, to conclude my giant essay *sorry!* Everyones different so we should all just be happy with what we got! ?
