argueing the toss with vodaphone...i'm wasting my time aren't i? :-(

kierenthecommunity, 20 February, 2009 at 14:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 30

I've been with vodaphone for aaaaaaaaages, and was on a package which was around £25 a month. i rarely used my calls (about 200 mins i think) but usually went over on texts.

last october i was bombarded with calls from companies saying they could do me a better package, but got fed up of them not calling back as promised. so i called voda and asked what could they do to stop me going elsewhere.

the chap said i could have one for about a tenner a month, more texts but only 75 mins of calls. on refection, yes, this seems quite low but i don't talk on the phone much so was guided by him. it was also a package that should have been about £20 but he said i got it discounted if i didn't replace my phone.

first month or so all was fine, but my bill last month was £35. ? i tried to call them but could never get through and tbh i gave up and forgot all about it.

this month it was £31so i called again and waited for about a year to get through. i was told the high bill was due to excess calls, many cross network. i was so peed off i now i'm paying more than on my previous contract. the operator sounded like she didn't give a toss.

she offered me a 'better option'...which was to go back on my previous contract. ?

i asked if i could have something to compete with competitors...she said the disconnection department could offer this but not to me as i'm 'mid conract'. the fact i felt i've been mis-sold this contract seemingly makes no odds.

i then asked if i could go elsewhere but the disconnection fee is £145! ? again the fact i feel i've been mis-sold cut no ice.

i'm now waiting for a manager to call me back. is it worth argueing or should i just suck it up? i know i've probably not researched what i was offered as well as i should but i've been with them over a decade ffs...surely they can do something?

apologies if i've bored everyone, i'm just so cross. ?

but wouldn't he have looked at my average usage before advising if a package is appropriate? i had to look at stuff like that when i sold finance

anyway that's beside the point. i know i've not been very bright here. but i want them to do something in recognition of my 10 years plus worth of loyalty to them. not just fob me off with 'tough shyte it's your fault'

and that's probably where i'm expecting to much...

Does vodaphone have anything like Orange's Best Plan? Its where they periodically review your account to see if your on the best plan for you, in regards to text and mins.

I suppose in a way they didn't exactly mis-sell the plan as you knew the amount of minutes/texts you were getting, but it was bad to make you think it was a better plan for you, and would save you money.

I must admit that over the phone mobile companies are quite elusive and don't always give you the facts. I find it difficult to dispute things as there tends to be no record of anything, just what they typed in the computer.
I just had a similar prob, where I upgraded my phone, was always on a 12 month contract, but the lady made it an 18 month without telling me. Of course I have no way to prove she didn't tell me she was making it 18 month, other than the fact I would never have agreed to an 18 month contract.

Could you not talk to someone higher up? surely someone can help. perhaps phone a different dept like complaints, as some depts are better than others.

They're supposed to sell the things remember....

Yeah, TBH loyalty counts fer naff all. Now, come the end of your contract things might be very different.

I'm one of those lucky folks who they don't even attempt to sell contarcts to. I would use 75 minutes in a month mayby once or twice a year (holidays), an additional 75 would probably see me through the rest of the year.

I havent really got any advice other than dont wait around for the call from the manager if they are anything like Carphonewarehouse.

I had major issues with them which started in August 08 and 5 months later I was still waiting for one of their people to ring me back after being promised hundreds of times!

Is it worth going back to your old contract and taking out a bundle for more texts?

To be frank, youre a muppet. you ve not been missold anything, you accepted the new package he offered to you on the basis that you werent using your 200 minutes, and now youre obviously going over your allowance with either time and or cross network calls. the solution is straightfoward - dont call as much. Or, try it on with their retentions dept, tell them you want a better deal and you ll take an 18 month contract for it, but that if they dont play ball you ll keep within your minutes and leave at the end of the contract.

TBH I left Voda because they were rubbish. Infact in the letter I sent to them leaving I actually stated I would rather stick red hot pokers in my eyes than continue getting a service through them.

What Nick says, but also did the operator clearly state you were given 75 mins based on your usage? I would think this is the only area you can query ie I was told that this was the best deal for me based on usage and try and argue that point.

I would put everything in writing to them though and not speak to someone, they are useless one the phone. My H had something called phones for life, an insurance that guaranteed you a new phone for 250 quid each year. He had paid it for 4 years AFTER the deal stopped (I got told about this when renewing my contract with them but he never did and continued paying it). He called loads and got told tough b0obs you can't have a new phone, but when we wrote a letter they seemed to take notice on this.

    Good luck!

because they will get really bored of me complaining if they don't do something for me ?

and they've had their pound of flesh with how ever many of years i've paid them for now. it's not like i've been a phone whore and just joined them

I'm afraid Nick's right. There is NO WAY they'll waive the disconnection fee when by not waiving it they've got you, your contract and your extra minutes for another 14 months ?

I would either just suck it up and limit your calls (you could try texting people to say "call me ?) or go back to the old contract.

I would guess there's no way they will waive the disconnection fee, after all it's their "compensation" effectively for leaving mid contract before they've got a decent profit out of you on this new contract.

I find mobile phone tariffs so bloody confusing. I am on Vodafone as well (PAYG though) and whenever I phone to top up I get some message saying "you're on the Vodafone Anytime price plan with Vodafone Passport and Vodafone Stop the Clock" or some such mince. I have NO idea what any of these things are ?

Kieran, I don't think you are going to get anywhere with Vodaphone, sounds like they have got you caught until the end of your contract.

Would there be any benefit to using your phone only for texts, getting a free PAYG phone, sticking a tenner a month on it and use that for calls? A faff perhaps, but you probably wouldn't go over your £10 contract limit and then you could tell them to poke it at the end of the contract?

well not really. the whole point was to save money ☹️

i can't understand this mentality of the phone companies being happy for you to be a pissed off customer for 18 months. surely if they help you out you'll stay around even longer?

maybe i worked at first direct too long where we bent over backwards to resolve disatisfaction ☹️

Can't you just go back onto your old tariff? I'm not with Vodafone but T Mobile will let me change my tariff even if I'm still in contract.

i can explain that one. yes, they want to retain your custom, but you arent a high spender, and whilst they *might* move you up on to your previous tarriff, you threatening them with "i m off if you dont" doesnt have much weight as youre not a high spender. youre inder contract to pay them a certain amount anyway. you have a "value" figure attached to you based on your previous spends each month, and if they can do something for you within that value figure, then they will do if you say you want to go. however, youre not really worth than much to them (sorry ?) and on that basis, they wont fight that hard to keep you. if you were spending 500 quid a month and more, then they would be kissing your arse because if your contact cost, say, 150 quid amonth for 10000 minutes, but yet you were spending another 350 plus on extra, then they have to bend over to keep you, otherwise you would simply pay up the rest of your contract at 150 per month, and they then lose 350 per month - its in their interests to give you phones, more minutes, texts, suck your cock ( or rub your boobs for you if youre a girl ?)

the short answer is that you have no weight with them i m afraid.

well yes, but i'm still not saving money ☹️

when i called i explained other companies were trying to poach their business and give me a better deal. but i was giving them the chance to match them.

silly me for not researching the other offers better, yes, but i was naive enough to think they'd see me ok. ☹️

    ?

i know what you're saying...that makes sense and all.

but i don't know, i still think they should be keen to keep their bread and butter customers too. it all adds up surely.

"Hey! John! I've got this bird on the phone who s spend consits of sending voting texts to "strictly come dancing" and "x factor" and a few chats with her mates, but what on earth do we do becase other firms are trying to steal this profitable business away from us. Get the Board together at once! they must meet immediately to discuss and resolve ?. Oh and John? In the meantime, send round a troop of chippendales to perform for her, a hamper from fortnums and a faberge egg" ?

Kieren, I'm quite surprised by your situation. I had a moan at the Vodafone shop ages ago saying that I want to leave their network, got given their disconnections team number, went through the same conversation again and got given a really good deal on the contract (I think it's something like 15 quid for 100 free minutes). Get phone upgrades every 18 months too (except that I don't always upgrade!). Unless their policies changed dramatically since I did this.

I think I learned this from here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/mobile-phone-cost-cutting.
