Arguements over cake! ** updated **

MummyMoo82, 27 July, 2012 at 08:07 Posted on Planning 0 33

OH and I have 92 days to go andlast night we argued a bit over cake. I want chocolate, or something a bit unusual, he wants something more traditional and boring. Originally he wanted square, but I think he has come around to having a round one.

Did anyone else have Arguements like this? We can't have 2 cakes, so must compromise. I just hope we can come up with something good, and also someone to make it! We have a Topper so far, but that's it!

Are you having more an one tier? It's quite common for people to have different flavour tiers. We're thinking of having a fruit tier for the bottom and then Madeira for the others. I've been to weddings where people have had a chocolate tier, a carrot tier and a lemon tier. Something for everyone that way! ?

I agree with Loopz - different flavoured tiers could be the answer.

If you are just having a single tier perhaps you could have fruit cake & have a display of chocolate cupcakes as well?

I have this with other things, Boy says 'its traditional' and no other reason as to why he wants that, and no compromise Smiley smile

There is a US ting now of a 'Groom Cake' - Lol

I think the traditional top tier with cupcakes down might work. Or two tiers so you each get what you want. Or show him chocolate/other cakes but decorated 'traditionally' he may get it.

Come back to it as well, Boy does on occasion change his mind on tradition Smiley smile

We both hate fruit cake so that was sorted no probs. Other than that he didn't care.

As it turned out we had a tier of chocolate, one o lemon and one of fruit. My mam made my cake and that was the recipe she liked!

ETA: if you're anything like us you'll forget to cut it let alone eat it.

We are having chocolate, lemon and sponge as I can not stand fruit cake, saying that I dont really like cake much so I doubt I will be eating much of it!!

To quote 'you argued over a BIT of cake' would indicate is was a silly argument and you realise this - so why fuel the argument?

Also, traditional doesn't equal boring - we had a traditional cake and personally we didn't think it was 'boring' - maybe we were wrong!!

Having said that, I agree with everyone else's comments - have multiple tiers in different flavours or a single 'boring' cake with chocolate cupcakes. With only 92 days to go (congratulations btw - it will fly by!) you should be compromising and working together, not arguing. And on your big day it really wont matter, there are bigger things to smile about.

If budget's an issue, I reckon yours will be much more expensive.

Couldn't you both compromise and get something inbetween?

Why don't you have something a little less traditional with a traditional bit in it. I.e. top tier chocolate, middle tier fruit or sponge so that everyone gets a choice? Or have your cake as the one you cut but have a fruit cake and sponge cake to cut up and give out as well so everyone can chose what they want.

    Just a thought

Of course it was a silly Arguement - I said I eat more cake than he does so I am more of an expert on cakes, lol.

We will of course end up having something in between the two because that is what compromise is about. I just wondered if anyone elses H2B was being like that, or if they were not interested in cakes altogether

My OH couldn't care less about the cake, especially seeing as it's being made for free by a friend. I think if we were paying for it he'd want more input to try and keep the price down.

I'm going for a traditional fruit tier (the smallest!), a carrot tier and then (my favourite) a lemon sponge with blueberry jam!!

Mr C was not interested in cake at all and was a bit annoyed at having to pay £100 for an M&S one!

But anything that he did have an interest in for the wedding I took notice of and let him lead in the decision... he chose the centrepieces, his suits and decided that we had to put money behind the bar.

Has your OH been interested in any other aspects of planning the wedding? If not, I would let him have what he wanted!

He has been great so far and quite interested - giving the go ahead for lots of random things I've suggested. As soon as we sort the cake I will post on here so you can see how we compromised.

I still maintain that I've eaten more cake than him, but he said no, lol.

    Hi,

Could you not design a 2 tier, one square in one flavour and one round in the other. This would suit all and give a choice when you hand it round to people.

You could possibly buy the 2 shapes from m and s and assemble and decorate yourself.

    Hope that helps

I definitely agree with the idea of having different flavour toers, as it gives people more choice both in planning and nomming it Smiley smile Making one of my best friend's cake for her wedding tomorrow, and she's having tiers of chocolate, lemon and vanilla sponges.

One thing I will say though is to keep in mind the nature of the cake stack - even with hidden dowels, there can be a lot of weight balanced on the bottom tier if you're going to have a directly stacked cake. So fruitcake DOES work best for the most load-bearing tier, just that a lot of people don't like it any more. In which case, a denser sponge - pref Madeira - works okay. It has a denser, more moist crumb and is less likely to squish!

We're having a cheese cake, OH really wanted it so have to let him have his way on some things and I don't really mind and we're going to use it as part of the evening buffet. It's my mum who was dissapointed, so now she says she's going to make us a traditional cake too. Only trouble is, mum is saying she only wants to make fruit cake so she can make it in advance and neither of us really like fruit cake! But if it makes her and him happy I'm just letting them both go with it - how very unbridezilla of me!

I want a chocolate cake and OH is being way more traditional, which came as a complete surprise to me, but he keeps having to remind me that it's mainly other people that will be eating the cake so we should have a bottom tier of fruit cake and top 2 layers of sponge with maybe different fillings and we can get me a special super duper chocolately gooey cupcake to shut me up Smiley smile not that I plan to be eating too much on the day so I don't splode out my dress! x

Can I be the very boring voice of reason here and say it is only a cake. Would you rather spend £400 on a cake or £100 on a nice m&s one and stick £300 behind the bar? My friend spent £300 on a cupcake tower and hardly any of them got eaten because the Dj was so good everyone forgot about food!!

Our wedding cake was the thing I was least bothered about regarding the wedding.

I told my parents (hosting the wedding) I'd rather have no cake and a more expensive car/photographer etc.

My mother upheld that people *like* to see a cake so we now have a three tier fruitcake - designed to our wishes.

By the design, it's going to look lovely but at the end of the day - it's cake.

in your situation OP I would let OH have his wishes but that might just be me. ?

This. My friends would definitely appreciate the booze more! ?

We're having a cheese tower which works out SO much cheaper than the average cake, and is more to our taste ... but the chances are that we won't eat any of it anyhow!

This immediately sprang to mind as a compromise: http://www.marksandspencer.com/Marks-and-Spencer-Classic-Wedding/dp/B00170PCYQ?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_17&nodeId=80083031&sr=1-17&qid=1343551919

Its from Marks and Spencer and you can have chocolate or vanilla sponge or fruit cake, Or a mix of all three, and it is iced in chocolate flavoured icing. You get the chocolate, he gets the traditional look. Would something like that work?

Neither of us like fruit cake. We're having 3 tiers, 1 chocolate(my choice), 1 carrot (OH choice) and 1 sponge with lemon filling. Yum!
