Arrrghhh my neighbours house alarm AIBU

Missus Jolly, 25 February, 2009 at 21:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

It is ringing in my ears now for the third time today (and I was at work between 8am and 5:30PM). They got burgled a couple of months ago (which I have massive sympathy about) and consequently got a new alarm fitted. It has gone off serveral times a day and night (yes a day) for the last two months. I am nearly at the end of my patience. Surely it is reasonable of me to have expected them to rectify this by now? I don't really know them either so lord knows how I could approach them about it.

Do they know how often it is going off? are they actually at home when it is going off? if so, i would be going round and mentioning it?

If its going of several times a day I reckon something needs doing to it not that I know what lol. I would be whinging, but like you say its a tricky subject. Are they always in when it happens? Could be they dont realise its as bad as it is?

Hmmm, little miss noise police says its a problem. The sensors may be set too high, or there are problems with the unit. Depends what is happening. Is it sounding for 20 mins at a time, cutting off and starting up again?

It does go off after a while, I have never timed it. Once it is off it is a few hours before it starts again.

Why don't you put a note through their door saying their alarm is going off frequently when they are out. They may not realise. Otherwise report it to the local police station - our alarm went off ONCE in error and we had a standard note put through the door from the police saying we needed to ensure it wouldn't happen again, possible noise pollution etc. Legally, it can only ring for 20 mins at a time before it has to reset itself.

    I can sympathise entirely

We live above a post office and it once started going off at 7pm on a Friday - unfortunately it was a bank holiday weekend, and no one was back until the following Tuesday morning. It was a new alarm too, and due to a some kind of electrical or wiring fault it didn't cut out like they're supposed to after a few hours, and was going off the entire weekend day and night.

We also have a student house opposite, which has similar alarm issues on and off. We had a bit more luck tracking down the owners of that one though, but it stil took a couple of days ?.

The police came to both, but said there was nothing they could do as there was no sign of a break in at either

I think I'll have a word with their next door neighbour (who I know) and then perhaps do as Clarry suggested. Thanks guys.

I'd definately have a word with them first, but h says if you want to take it further you could try contacting the Local Authority environmental Health Dept. Keep a note of all the times it goes off. H sometimes used to have to get judges up at 4 in the morning to sign warrents to break in and turn alarms off when he worked for the LA!!
