As it seems to be ipod day today can I ask a question?

I'm mulling over a few ideas for my 40th birthday in August and have been looking at the ipod nano-I'm so shallow but they look so nice! Anyway I have a 1gb mp3 player at the momment. Its not a brand name one and its easy to put the music on from the pc its just irritates me when I want to change album. Anyway my main concern would be the cost of downloading music from itunes. Does it cost a fortune to use. How far do the itunes gift cards go? Also is it possible to add your own stuff on or can you only just use the stuff you download. TIA

I have lots of my CD albums loaded onto my nano. They still go into the itunes library on your PC but you dont have to pay for them as you havn't downloaded from itunes. You are just saving the CD to your library (hope that makes some sense LOL)

I have only purchased a few tunes from itunes on my nano

    What PJ said.

Itunes are about 79p for any new song you want to buy, but you can still upload any CDs you may have. I've also just bought a load of MP3 songs using Nectar points (so they were FREEEEEEEEEE), but it did slightly screw up my ITunes library - but I think that's probably my IT incompetance over anything ITunes did or didn't do.

I've bought very little through iTunes and have still managed to fill up 160 gigabytes!

Basically, with very very few exceptions (generally ones that use weird and controversial copy protection systems, but they're in a tiny, tiny minority), any CD you own will be completely compatible with iTunes/the iPod, as will any MP3 file. Or indeed most video files, given that the nano can handle that sort of thing.

The only faff is uploading them in the first place, a job I started in 2001 when I bought my first iPod and still haven't finished... ?

Sorry for the delay in replying I was on the school run. Thanks everybody. I'm really pleased that I can do that. Now I know what to put on my birthday list. I'm so excited I can't wait?
