    Daisy, don't just laugh...share your experiences ?

My housemate at uni had it too...do we just have extra-sensitive smelling powers?

Hmn, it seems the wonderweb is divided on this point. I've found sites claiming both it only affects some and that only some can smell it.

I always assumed it was like beetroot - I know several people who claim it turns their wee red but I've never experienced this.

Noone knows which way it is lobster - could be that only some people metabolise the asparagus that way or it could be that some people are anosmic to the compound in question. However I'd love to find out. A couple of ways you could do it - one is to take vials of the compound responsible for the smell and see if everyone can smell it. The other is to feed lots of people asparagus and both analyse their wee for the compound and also give it to lots of people to see if it smells.

I think the former might be more pleasant ?

Perhaps next time Lobster has asparagus, she could ask someone else to smell her wee? ?

The first (and only) time I ate asparagus, my wee smelt disgusting for days. I'm never eating it again if I can help it.

If it's going to be scientifically valid she's going to need to ask loooooads of people to smell her wee ?

I wondered if me eating asparagus would make my daughter's wee smell when I was BFing, but the one time I ate it I forgot to check. I suspect she's eating too many other things now to make it a valid experiment. Plus I should have had twins and kept one for a control ?

Now that's dedication to your field ?

FWIW I never heard of the asparagus effect before reading about it on here, so either I'm not affected or I just have a poor sense of smell.

I've heard of beetroot doing funny things to your wee but never heard of asparagus affecting it. I love asparagus but can't say i've ever noticed anything particular whiffy about my wee after eating it....

    ? at hazel's control twin

Perhaps I should indulge in asparagus and then camp out in the ladies loo at work and conduct a general canvassing - in the name of science of course? Then again to be truly scientific I'd haev to invite some of the guys in too!

And that, hazel, is exactly why MrF was disappointed that we weren't having twins. scientists ?

i haven't experienced asparagus wee but definitely get beetroot wee. and it's quite a shock until you remember the recent meal ?.

i can also report that asparagus changes the colour of expressed breast milk. we had a whole load of bottles in the fridge which got progressively more green during asparagus season last summer ?
