Asthma sufferers / Prednisolone

Mal, 1 April, 2008 at 21:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

Fuck me. I've not been on steroids for ages and I had forgotten how much of a pig they make me. I only had my dinner about 2 hours ago and now I am tucking into more toast. I must have had about half a loaf today, as well as all the other stuff. And I am drinking gallons, and peeing like a racehorse as a result. I took my last dose yesterday, let's hope it stops soon before I turn into a roly poly.

I've had 6 courses of prednisolone in the past 3 months. I've been quite ill and in and out of hospital. Due to them, I had put on 3 stone in as many months. I was devastated especially as I hadnt particularly been eating that much, well I dont think I did ?. I have managed to lose a stone in the past 3 weeks since coming off my last course but fcuk me! they really muck your body up... well, they did mine.
It's good to know that the weight does come off again afterwards though.
I've had to join Weightwatchers to shift what I have put on?.

I absolutely hate going on them. Actually I hate everything about my chronic asthma including the artery thing [xx(]

They also make me have a very red face.
    God! I sound a picture don't I!

Like you, I was mega thirsty all the time too.
You should be ok from tomorrow and won't want to eat as much.

? to feeling like your old self again soon.

I was on 9 a day of these when I had a severe allergy, I put on 2 stone in about a month! On the upside my eyes weren't like slits, I could breathe and didn't have a rash ?

The weight gain is a daily battle but hopefully now you are off them you will fel much better.
I hate the things the stroids do to my body but they do also help me in a tremendous way and are like magic medicine to me.

I occassionally have steriods for my asthma was on steriods for a month before an operation last year. They are fantastic for my asthama when it is bad and were great before and after my operation as the healing time was non existent BUT I have put on one and a half stone and I just cannot shift it even though I have been off them now for 4 months. Bloomin things

    They are yuck.

I've been on them for 2.5 years now (not for asthma) and although I don't like taking them, I'm glad I do! I've never really had the munchies, just the weight gain, I was a size 10 when I started and I'm not a 22!

I'm on symbicort and have taken steroids for as long as I can remember. Thankfully though I don't seem to be on high enough dose to make me want to stuff my face ? I don't think that my weight gain is all due to them, having three children I think is mainly my problem!

However when it's a choice between being able to breath easily each day and being slightly overweight I know what I'd choose!

Hope you get back to normal soon ?

id="quote">I take 10mg daily at the moment so a fairly lowish dose. Don't be scared of them. ? When ever I have a size wobble, I remind myself I'd rather be able to function and be bigger than smaller and in bed all the time. They do work wonders. ?

id="quote">Thanks for that Mrs M. I can't remember what dose I'll be on but I'll check when I get home. MrBoB isn't happy about me going on them but my current line of thinking is that, like you say, the alternative is far worse.

I should also say that although weight gain is common, it's not a given. Everyone has different side effects. I've stayed at the same weight for over a year now but when I did come of steroids for 2 months, I went from a size 20 to 16 so I know when I stop them for good, I will lose some weight again.

I think you need to try them if it's the right thing for your health. ?

When I'm on prednisolone I tend to have a short sharp dose of 30-40mg for about 2-3 weeks. When I'm on it for longer periods (a few months), it can be anywhere between 5mg-20 mg a day.

I think I get frustrated becuase although I know it helps I'm on 4 asthma pumps a day + 2 other tablets. I feel it's shake me & I rattle!

    Hugs to everyone on them...
