Have any of you bought a house at auction before or just through the usual methods?

Ta.

Only through the usual methods. Auctions scare me.

No but we have talked about it for our next property..

I think it all depends on the house...

Thanks, ladies. We've had an offer rejected on a house (not surprising really!) so the auction's our next step.

In the numpties on 'Homes under the Hammer' are anything to go by, we should be alright... I hope!

Ooh, good luck! I think the thing that scares me is that I could fall in love with a house and have to really fight and maybe still not get it. I guess I just feel 'safer' the normal way.

I think what they say is have your maximum and don't go past it.. You can get carried away in the auction fun...

I have sold various things at auctions though paintings / furniture.. If people get carried away then that's fine when I am the seller!!!

Good advice, Mrs C, thank you.

Agree completely Rache. I'm not sure I'd have the bottle to do it for a dream house.

I would be too scared but I reckon bargains could be had! Only thing that might put me off would be having to pay for surveys etc on a house that you aren't guaranteed to get (or risking buying with no survey!).

Yes, that does strike me as sensible...

That probably made no sense, a while ago, I was signed off work for a good few weeks, and spent every day watching Homes Under The Hammer, and it seemed to me that all they said was "well, you should have read the legal pack", I was sort of going along with your comment on that programme !

My sister bought her house through an auction. They paid £150k (was expected to go for £200k) and recently had it valued at £450k! Think they did well out of it. I love homes under the hammer! A uni friend was on it a few years ago, made a huge loss after the credit crunch hit though!

I have never bought, although I do attend a lot with work. I have seen a lot that won't sell elsewhere (cos they're falling apart!) so they sell for rock bottom at auction. I have seen others where people get carried away bidding against each other and actually end up paying more than market value!

I know you'd be sensible and read the legal pack. Some don't though, and end up with nasty surprises.

    Thanks, ladies!

The guide price on this place is really good. It needs a fair bit of work but that can be done with a sensible budget. It strikes me as a great investment but because of this I suspect it'll be a fair bit above the guide price. I'm not holding out much hope of getting it but worth a bash!
