Baby guinea pig update (with pics)

Zo, 10 September, 2008 at 10:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 41

I just thought I would update the baby guinea pig progress as they are now 5 weeks old.

First 4 pics are newborn and the last 4 were taken just now. (edit sorry pics came up in the wrong order)

Dad is lovely, very much like our longhaired. How often do you brush him? We had to cut a huge chunk of Fluffy's hair the other week, it was all matted.

Is it wrong that Dad reminds me of Boris Johnson with that straggly mane of hair?

Ive only been nipped once, and that was because the guinea pig was scared. They are much easier to handle than rabbits and hamsters

My son is off to chose a baby guinea on Saturday, its his Birthday today and thats what he wants, hes going to set up the cage tonight but cant have the guinea pig till Sat as they are not ready yet. we looked into the pros and cons of getting one as he is only 4 and im satisfied if treated right they make brilliant childrens pets (and im secretly looking forward to it myself )

Dont feel awful! It will help stop matted hair though. We have animal shampoo, we put them in the bath and wet them with the shower then massage in like you wash your hair then rinse, being careful not to get it on the face. They don't really like it and jump and try to escape, so it can take 2 people to wrangle.

So they don't sit in any water then, you kind of hose them down. I suppose being in the bath they can't escape. How do you dry the hair? towel dry it? Fluffy lives outside so I wouldn't want her to catch a cold...

No we dont let them sit in the water (they actually wouldnt stay in it anyway). They can jump out of the bath, so you have to be careful. As long as she is fully dry before going back out she'd be fine. We use a towel, you can use a hair dryer on low but ours hate it. If you can keep her in for a few hours to make sure she's fully dry that'll help.

I towel dry mine. If they are normally kept outside I'd keep them indoors until you are convinced they are completely dry.

Thanks Zoe, I might give it a try this weekend, or hold off until the kids are here so they can hold her. I can't see her liking the hairdryer, she hates noise and runs to hide in her tunnel when a train goes by. The only noise she does like is the sound of us pulling grass out of the ground for her.

No worries, you can get the shampoo from most pet shops.

We keep ours indoors, but they can hear the train (goes passed the end of the garden) they dont seem to worry about it. Its bag rustling they react to, they know it means food so go mental!

Very cute! My son would love guinea pigs but I'm not sure we have the time to devote to them.

Boz, are you just getting the one piggie? It's just they are very sociable animals and everywhere I've read says that they really should be kept in pairs as single piggies can get very lonely. ☹️ If you have room for one piggie, a second one doesn't need that much more really.

We have two boys (Bert & Ernie, Mr FigJam named them!) and they are fantastic little pets, much easier to handle and interact with than hamsters etc and love snoozing on us while we're watching the tv. Ours are indoor pets, we have a huge cage in the living room so we are able to watch and interact with them more than if they were outdoors. You should hear the noise they make when I come in from work- I am under no illusions that coming in the front door without a handful of grass is not on! ? There's always one of them on "breakfast patrol" when we come down in the morning too! Very cute! ?

They have a huge outdoor hutch and run for exercising in, but they are big wimps and spend the whole time hiding under a big log pile, we need to move it periodically while they're out so they munch the grass under it evenly! ?

We have puppy shampoo for bathing them, but they're short haired, so don't have to do it too often. I use the shower head in the bath as well and towel dry them after with a little low speed/low heat from the hair dryer. They're not too keen on it, but smell lovely and are so silky after! If you are putting a piggie outside after a bath you definitely need to make sure they're completely dry again before going back out or they will catch a chill.

Zoe, your baby piggies are gorgeous, do you have new homes for them yet?

They do prefer being in pairs, but as long as you pay a lot of attention 1 on its own should be ok.

We have small animal shampoo, but puppy shampoo might be cheaper.

We have homes for 1 maybe 2, so need homes for 2 or 3 of them

Unfortunately I think my husband won't let us get another guinea pig, otherwise I would take one of those cuties off your hands (he has got good reason, we already have 2 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs, 4 rats and a chinchilla)

    Mean husband!

My H started to put his foot down with fish when I got to 9 tanks! I only have one fish tank now though and went on to furry pets, 2 guinea pigs, 2 rabbits and a cat

See I have also read about them being in pairs, we are going on Saturday to get 1 guinea that will be kept in the living room in a big indoor cage,

    BUT

(whispers) I just know we will end up bringing 2 home, I have checked and they have pairs of girly guineas

That's it! I knew that photo reminded me of someone!

I love guinea pigs, they make the best pets. They are so friendly and love to snuggle (mine had sleeping bags). The tufty ones are so cute. Mine were agoutis (inspired by Zoay's piggies) and had that gorgeous two coloured hair.

    Congrats on the babies!
