LooseLadie, 12 August, 2010 at 22:05 Posted on Planning 0 30

Well ladies, i just wanted to ask you what you thought of balloons?

Im having flowers etc but My friend offered to do some balloon arches etc by the door ways... Im not sure on this? What do you think?

Also i wanted these balloons to spell MR & MRS And join them all together but i cant find the "&" anywhere, any ideas?? I have tried EBAY...

The balloons them self are 40" and they are £5 each so i dont really want to have to buy "AND"

Personally I don't like balloons. I know a lot do and I've been to a lot of weddings with them.

My MIL is obsessed with them but I think you have to ba careful, too many and it can look a bit tacky.

Personally not keen on balloons, even the letter shaped ones. But that's just my taste.

You could always just get "MR" and "MRS without the "&" or "AND" and have each one behind you, so the Mr behind your Husband at the table and the Mrs behind you at the table.

I'm really not keen on balloons, I generally find them tacky, especially arches. I don't mind one per table or something like that but nothing extreme.

I'm not keen on balloons either. A few here and there aren't too bad but I personally don't like them on each table or made into a focal point

I'm not having any balloons as I don't much like them but it really does depend on your theme etc.

Went to a reception recently with a disco theme, disco ball shaped balloons on the tables and half the ceiling covered in balloons, really went with the theme, and the kids loved the balloons, very fun but not the classiest style of decorations! ?

I was thinking of getting a few balloons. Probably just two bunches that will sit in the corner of the room or something, with helium in them. My thinking was my kids will love them. I know for a fact that as soon as the wedding dance starts my dd and ds will each be holding as many as they can fit into their chubby little hands.

Not keen on balloons trying to be a focal point though.

    I'm having balloons!

We're having a group of 3 on each table, a helter skelter at each side of the top table and an archway into the room from the bar area. Also an exploding one for the first dance. Our venue is massive so can get away with these.

If you can't find the & could you use a star or a heart?

    Hope you find something?

Yay! You're my date twin and my decor twin Vickstix! We're also having balloons - 3 on each table (didn't have the budget for flowers on all tables and it adds a splash of colour to the room!), a fancy top table arch and a cake table arch. Our venue too is quite big and very bright and airy - I think it depends on the style of the venue but in our case it works and it's going to look lovely!

Don't worry about the opinions of others - if you like something go with it ? xxx

Everyone is saying how tacky balloons are but your 'balloons' are very different being letters. what about just your initials or the word love perhaps to save a bit of money? If the balloon features are created well then it'll look great.

It's definitely how you have you balloons...I'm not a huge fan of the arches but for some wedding it looks fine especially if your room is quite big...it's when you start to get balloon brides and grooms it gets a bit odd. I don't think you can really compare to a kids party unless you stick them (unimaginatively) in bunches of 3 in each corner of the room.

We had a tight budget for table decorations and the flowers in portugal were rather expensive so my friend created our centrepieces for us ...then we had some evening fun!

Oh Dear, what's so wrong with balloons! ? I think your letters will be fab! Also think like someone said the Mr Mrs will be fine without the &.

We're having a cluster on each table in our colours, they are balloons within balloons and say just married on them, they're very nice. We're also dare I say....having an arch!! (behind our top table) I guess it depends on what kind of look you're after, if it's a specific look / theme for your wedding they may not work, but we're just very 'weddingy' Sweets, balloons, table confettie, bubbles - bring it on I say!

Sorry but I also have to add that in general balloons to me are 'common' they exist for general parties, not weddings.

And one of my biggest pet hates at formal parties is balloons on the centre of the table.

Despite saying that if you are going to do something different with them, or a couple of descrete ones then fine. Just a couple of big hearts on the cake or present table or something.

Or maybe a balloon sculpture! Last year we attended a girly night, that put on a fashion show and one designer presented ballgowns made out of balloons, which were absolutely amazing. I talked to one of the models for quite a while after the show and she was still wearing it, and it was made just like balloon animals, with them all twisted together to make a frock. They'd even used colour balloons to make a pattern in the dress.

Now I don't see why you couldn't make your 'Mr & Mrs' like that. And that would look truely amazing!!!

I think personally, if they are tastefully done then why not?

We didnt have any balloons on our day except the big exploding one which looked fab on our wedding video for our first dance (we didnt have kids there so it wasnt a problem) and we had a bride and groom air walker which was sat at the top table for when we arrived at the reception which was discarded once everyone was seated but did give our guests a great laugh. I'm all for a bit of fun!!

Well I must be both common and tacky then because I love balloons at weddings ? Our reception isn't very formal though so balloons and such decor wouldn't be out of place.

Sorry I can't help with finding a "&" balloon but the heart-shaped one is a good idea instead if you're going to put them behind your chairs.

I don't think that balloons themselves are tacky or common, but they are often used unimaginatively as a cheap (relatively) and easy option.

My parents had them at their 25th anniversary party, as my mum couldn't be bothered to find, fork out for and organise arranging her own table centres, and it was what the venue offered. They looked fine, but were distinctly unmemorable. ?

Doesn't mean they're not OK, but I guess decorations are another one of those areas that can be a big thing for some people and not for others so for those who are looking for really original ideas, it might not be for them.

Me too! I loooove balloons and I dont think any celebration is complete without them. I did wonder if my guests would think they were tacky but i dont give a flying wotsit!! Haha!! We are having bunches of 3 attached to cake stands full of mince pies Smiley smile

I think you can go overboard but a few simple things such as the arch and your letters would look fab!!!

I used to think them tacky, then saw them at a friends b'day party in a bunch of 6 in the centre of the tables, great impact at a relatively small cost..........

    Hi Natty

I am a balloon decorator and I haven't seen the & symbol anywhere - I would suggest a large silver heart between the Mr and Mrs if you don't want an and.

My only advice to you is ask if you can buy two of each letter (4 of the M) on a use or return basis if you can as these balloons have to be filled carefully, if you are trying to inflate them and get out all the crinkles you have to be very careful, it is very easy to over inflate and burst them at the seams.

I was very sad to see so many people saying balloons are tacky. I've worked and trained very hard to create many weddings and give them a wow factor for the bridal party. Glad some ladies like them :-)

    Good luck with your letters

    Best wishes

    Maddie

Yeah another date twin for 18th Sept 2010!!! ?

I'm really not arsed what other people say about balloons. Everybody is allowed their opinion and that is why I like hitched. No one gets judged for it.

It was OH and mine decision. Our budget is tiny and our wedding is very informal so they suit our day really well.

Lamby - We're also having the balloon in a balloon for the tables but only the top one in a bunch of three!

If the balloons are done by a professional they look really good.

And the exploding balloon thing I'll keep in mind but the kids that are coming are old enough to know better so hopefully they won't ruin it and the only little one is my niece who will be 6months on the day x

I am a little undecided about balloons... I don't like balloon arches or standard shaped ballons as centrepieces, however I do like balloons that are a little different to the norm, like the letters.

I am toying with the idea of using these large round balloons, on clear wire and at different heights around the room.

On a practical note helium balloons could be useful at venues that won't allow you to hang anything up etc.

I'm lucky as at my venue I can hang up whatever I like so will be having (and making) various paper lanterns, which I personally prefer to the balloons.

Also from another perspective I don't like using rubber, plastic, foil decorations etc. Mine will be paper, so hopefully can either be reused or recycled.

But as has already been mentioned it's all personal choice so there really is no right or wrong. I remember my mum talking to me ages ago about decorations with balloons and balloon arches as she thought they were good but I personally can't stand them - bit too retro for my tastes!

But then I'm also avoiding burgundy at all costs - been to too many events and venues with gold and burgundy (chairs etc) and I just don't like it myself as it's not me! But it has looked very elegant still.

I'm a "common" baloon girl too ? We are having a disco and buffet in a local pub as our recption so there will be no top table etc although I hope it 's not too tacky (just simple and FUN!) but it won't be posh either!

We just had a few bunches of 3 around the room to tie in our theme a bit more....not got pur pics put ours were like these below, but in black and white.

We actually got ours from the Matalan Party shop on the morning of our party - was a hilarious sight trying to fit about 30 balloons in the back of a Clio!
