Balloons or no balloons, that is the question!!

emmyroo22, 22 July, 2009 at 18:08 Posted on Planning 0 32

As above really?

who is having baloons at their reception? ive always been very anti them as ive seen so many tacky ones and think they look so cheap, but ive seen a few weddings recently with the odd few dotted around and i may be persuaded!! H2B wants them...but still unsure!!

Who's having/had what?

Not having them because of the reason you said, but if you can show me some nice ones I might be persuaded otherwise!!

Don't think it would fit my venue very well, as it retains a lot of its 12th century character.

post some pics if anyone has any good ones1

I'm not a fan of balloons at weddings - in terms of balloon arches or as centrepieces.

However, I've recently seen how much lil ones like them so am considering a balloon each for the children tied on their chair at the meal. Especially as the wedding is 4 days after one of them's birthdays. If I did it would be a silver helium one I think.

I think you hit the nail on the head with your first post....they can look terribly tacky, but if done well they can also look stylish and compliment the room.

The worst things i've seen are those inflatable bride and groom!

The best was a lilac themed wedding with lilac and silver balloons as centre pieces. They not only complimented the colour scheme, they also suited the very high ceiling of the venue.

Hope that helps and gives you some ideas.

That's a really nice idea, I'm also not a fan of balloons at weddings as they remind me too much of children's parties but having only a few specifically for the kids is a nice touch and will make them feel a bit special.

[View:https://www.hitched.co.uk/Chat/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Discussions.Components.Files/27/4617.SDC10368.tif:550:0]Im having balloons, having them as my table centres, a cloud 9 arch above the top table and an arch over the ceremony table which is then being moved to the entrance to the wedding breakfast. Attached are some example pics

I'm really not a fan at all. They remind me too much of 18th/21st birthday parties!

Im having balloons but as people have said to many then they look tacky!

we are having a special one made for the kids, its a big balloon with all tiny balloons inside and when you pop it all foil confetti comes out.

That's a cute idea, the kiddies will love that, let's hope they pop them in the venue and not in mum and dad's lounge lol!

Personally I also think balloons can look a bit tacky and I agree with whoever said it reminds you a bit of 18th and 21st parties - quite true! Having said that they can look nice, it does depend on how they're done though. I remember there was a thread similar to this a few months back and someone posted a pic of a reception room that was decorated using balloons, and it was done so subtly that it did work well - I would still prefer flowers though despite that.

You also need to take your venue into account, like someone else said. For instance our venue isa rustic barn-type, I don't think balloons would work well at all in there, even if I did like them. If your venue is more modern though it would probably work better depending on how you did it.

Personally though if you do decide to use them I would say keep it really subtle. Obviously all your choice though!

At the moment im more of the thinking its an extra expense that wont really add anything to the day as i dont think it'll be noticed that much (unless you have a massive arch with i dont like!!)

Anyone got any other photos to share...............

I didn't plan on having balloons but my mum organised a little cluster of them at each end of the top table and they were nice. There was only maybe 5 in a cluster and an ivory balloon with a little blue one inside to match the colour scheme.

I don't like balloon arches but I think a few dotted around the place is ok and can look nice.

I dislike balloons on tables at weddings and agree with a lot of what people say about them being tacky, etc.

BUT, having said that....I love these photos.....

I think the key is how you use them - I don't like them tied in threes, attached to a weight and plonked on tables, or balloon arches of any kind (sorry if I offended anyone)......but two photos make me soften to the idea of balloons at weddings!

Tough one, we were as a cheap alternative to table fowers but they are lets face it very 80's/90's...a few may look nice, but i think the venue looks just as nice, if not better, without them...i could still be persuaded as well though i think if i saw some wow ones x

I really like them with flowers, but have been put off by tacky comments. Perhaps if you don't overdo it, it might look really nice.

Were having them on the tables in the evening ...because its a cheaper way to decorate the venue. In the day they will be dotted around the room but on the tables we have long thin glass vases filled with black gel with ivory and black ostrich feathers in them.

Guess its a presonal preference thats all

I must admit im not a fan, I had the opourtunity to have them at our wedding by a friend who is just starting up a buissness, it was a really cheap price and he is good, but I decided against them, I knew the look I wanted for the wedding and ballons were never in my mind for it. I think everyone preference is different, theres so many ideas to get for balloons at weddings, so just have a look on the net, or ring a couple of companies and ask to see their portfolio.

You can see the balloons behind my dad making his speech...

we just had ones like this circled around the walls of the venue

be careful though - don't let your hubby do them on the morning of the wedding - this happens!

We did think of hiring a young lad from the village to tie a balloon onto every car in the church car park, so when they all came out of the church there would be hundreds of balloons. It would have looked pretty good too when they all travelled the 2 miles to the reception venue, but in the end we didn't bother - too much to worry about! I do regret not putting more thought into that though - it would have been so funny.

    Tacky tacky tacky. Hate balloons.

Especially when they are made into a wedding dress. Does the grrom get to pop them all one by one on the wedding night?

    Just nasty.

I originally thought that balloons looked tacky so wasn't going to have any but have decided to go for the confetti balloon above the cake and a cloud nine for behind the top table, balloons are fine IMO if they are done sparingly and not OTT.

We're having balloons, just for the evening reception though. our venue has really high cellings so they look really good. no arches or anything just 3 staggered and candles round the weight. cheap and cheerful!

Monkeybear....good pics and very tastefully done. Round the room is good....its when they become intrusive and overkill, then they look tacky.

We're having the same debate at the moment too! My sister had them at her wedding, just a few free-standing clusters dotted around the room, and they looked really tasteful so I would like to have some! I have been scouring websites looking at galleries to help make up my mind but there is such a fine line between tasteful and tacky I am scared of getting it wrong! ? I really like the idea of the exploding balloon above the dancefloor (if our venue will allow it) as it will look great in the photos!

    Hi

I have loads of pictures (but am an ex HIB) so can't post the site on here - if you want to see some examples just email me on *******@**************.*****.**.** and I'll send you the link.

Balloons are not 'tacky' if done correctly for the height of the room, the type of venue, etc - I've been doing weddings for many years and each one is a little different - styled to the bride and grooms wishes.

As most of the others have said - I'm not a fan of balloons either and think they can look tacky. I stress the 'can' - if they are done right they look really nice.

I'm going for fishbowls with fresh geberas and bear grass.
