Band quibbles

JengleBells1983, 29 April, 2008 at 10:15 Posted on Planning 0 5

Hi All,

We booked our band way back in November 06 for our wedding in 3 weeks. We have booked them through an entertainment agency but at the moment we seem to be having a problem getting them to physically play the right kinda song for our first dance rather than provide a cd and have them play that off a cd player.

They are by no means cheap as they are the next expensive thing on our budget next to the reception.

So far I have been really flexible with this but I am starting to think that for their cost they should be trying to be flexible for us.

Am I wrong in thinking that?

Think it depends on what the song is. Is the song already of their play list? If it is I don't see what the problem is, if isn't they may be unwilling to learn a new song.

Just my opinion though. Have you tried speaking to the Promotions company?

It's James Brown "Get Up" The playlist I have for them is a sample list and not their full one so I am kinda stabbing in the dark to find one they play and we like. I had mentioned 2 others songs to see if they played it and they didnt. Were not 100% bothered on what song it is inparticular but we would really like it to be something like the James Brown song.

All of this is being done via the promotions agency I have never actually spoken to the band themselves as the agency "doesnt allow it".

It really depends on the song - it might not be their style or the singer might not be able to hit some of the notes. If they don't feel that they would be able to do the song justice then I think they are right to say they won't play it.
Additionally if it's a new song & they didn't say that they would learn a new song for your first dance (some bands do, some don't, then maybe they don't have the time to learn one now. They may need to record backing tracks as well as learn the song, so I guess it's a lot of work.

I don't think there is anything worng with having a CD played for the first dance & then the band playing afterwards. We will be doing this as I don't want any slight differences in tempo/style to confuse me!!

When you booked them did they send you their playlist?
When you booked did you mention that you would be requesting a specific song for your first dance?

To be honest the cost is no reason for them to be flexible - you where told the rate they charge and you agreed to pay it.

It all depends on what was agreed when you booked them. We run an agency (although primarily classical and jazz musicians rather tahn bands) and if musicians are asked to learn a piece or song not in their repertoire then there will usually be an extra cost involved as they may have to pay to buy or have someone arrange the piece for them as well as extra rehearsals to learn it. This is something which is usually discussed at the time of booking.

Who are you liasing with on this - the band or the agency?

I would speak to the agency you booked thhem through

we are having a wedding singer, who obviously has his own playist, but we were told that if we wanted him to sing our first dance and it was a regular one for him, he would learn it for us

Just heard back from the agency. The band apparently do a really god motown medley which they are going to email a sample audio clip so I can have a listen.

Hopefully this will be it. Finger crossed.?
