bank transfer done to the wrong account

NeoShoegal, 7 May, 2009 at 11:03 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 1

A client of mine made an online bank transfer to my account (he's with Halifax, I'm with Abbey), at least that's what we both thought. Turns out there was a typo in the account number and now the money has gone to a different account. Abbey told me that they will need to contact their bank (halifax) and request a recall of the money. Halifax seems to say that we need to call Abbey and tell them to contact the owner of the other account and request that the money be given back.

From a quick google search it seems that these things can be long and painfull processes.

I don't understand why it is so hard that when a 1 digit mistake is made in typing in account number that it is much trouble to correct it.

Unfortunately we're talking about a serious amount of money, which was badly needed in my account. ?

Once money has cleared into a bank account then the permission is needed from the owner of the account for it to be debited. Only if your own bank have made an error are they able to automatically debit your account.

Your customer needs to contact his bank and ask them to request that the funds are recalled as he is the one who initiated the payment - as this is his error, he should really pay you straight away rather than wait for the funds to be returned. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do as until the funds are in your bank account, it is not considered legally yours.

    Not much help I'm afraid!

Been in touch with the financial ombuds service, and it's as you said. But the most frustrating thing is, that I made the mistake when giving the account number ?, so it's not my clients fault but he is now saddled with the hassle of trying to get it back.

As the transfer has gone through, the bank then needs to contact the people who received the money and ask for their permission to get it back. And if I understand it correctly, they don't have to agree. If they don't agree it's a matter of taking the other account holder to small claims court, which is again more trouble for my client and all my fault. So feel badly about putting my client through the trouble and potentially loosing the money. really can't afford any of it.

I could really beat myself up now. Feel like crawling back into bed and cry. [:'(]
