So ladies I am interested in your crazy reasons you may have rejected venues or heck suppliers too . I'll start with venues as I have no suppliers yet:

Big fat columns right in the middle of the function room (ideally we'd like a banquet style dinner)

One venue I'm considering is so very close to the road & offers an outdoor ceremony bit worried that all I would hear during my vows is vroom vrooooooom

Ugly carpets & curtains

What are yours?

Xx

If people ask me that far in advance then I am happy to take the booking, and also they will get it at todays prices too

Exactly Bill, I don't understand 1: why people have to be so horrible & 2: turn a booking away like that.

I think that part of the reason is that some suppliers are not doing what they do as a long term business and are only in it for some short term cash to help them through this (now ending ) slow down in the economy, there is a report that states that there are 600,000 new self employed since 2008 either to try to help make their own ends meet or to supplement their other half's reduced income. Im afraid that I saw it the last time and a lot of those people slowly went back to an employed job as the economy picked up, so if a supplier is not interested in your 2017 wedding then there are plenty who do see themselves as a long term business who should be happy to take your booking.

We discarded a really good DJ we know who really is great and gets everyone involved and is full of the chat because, well, every wedding we've been to where he has been the DJ has ended in divorce! I know that it's not his fault (and to honest half of the couples should never of got married in the first place but hey ho) but I can't help but think he is cursed.

Swirly carpets and dated decor- why don't hotels have plain flooring and walls? We discounted all but two venues in our area because of hideous carpets.

I agree that a lot of venues have swirly patterned carpets that are in heavy/busy colours and I've come to the conclusion that it's to avoid the dirt showing! I once visited a venue to meet their new wedding co-ordinator who had big plans to change the decor after the owners had asked for ideas before they refurbished the place. The actual building was lovely with beautiful gardens for photography. The bar area and lounge area was also full of character with open fires and a 'medieval' feel to it.

When she showed me the ceremony/function room, my heart sank! It was a long, rectangular room with small square windows down one side which were quite high up so no view out of them and very little natural light, ceiling tiles with office lighting, royal blue short curtains with royal blue carpet and conference chairs in royal blue and steel - yuk! It screamed of meetings (even smelled like a meeting room) and was so cold looking I couldn't believe that anyone could possibly sell that room as a room to get married in - absolutely awful. When I asked her roughly how many weddings a month they did, she said they hadn't done one for over 6 months!

    I wonder why!

We completely disregarded a venue because they kept spelling my name wrong on all the e-mails they sent me! It was driving me mad! I wouldnt have minded but i always sign my name at the bottom of e-mails so they could have just looked at that. I thought if they can't be bothered to even spell my name correctly then what else will they mess up on?

I disregarded any photographer with a 'colour splash' photo on their website. It's perhaps irrational, but I really hate that effect and I figured that if they used one as an example of their work, then we would have incompatible ideas about the photography. I know that some people like colour splash and may specifically request it, but it's not for me and it was important that my photographer wouldn't have to be directed on my likes and dislikes as I feel that would stifle the creativity that I'm paying them for in the first place!

Busy or old websites were also off-putting and quickly struck off the list.

Us too! And those where you don't have any idea of prices. I know with a lot of things you need a quote for the exact requirements but I like to see ball park figures.

Didn't even bother to view venues that had poor or out of date websites. Could well have been lovely but a poor website suggests poor organisation to me.

Disregarded one really lovely venue just because they only did long tables and I wanted round (the shape of the room was a long rectangle so round tables just wouldn't have fitted).

    One from the suppliers side...

A long time ago a prospective client told me that she couldn't book me because I was the wrong star sign, despite loving my work and us all getting along swimmingly. She even asked me if I could recommend an alternative photographer with a similar style!

I have disregarded so many because their rooms are too conferency - I think I just got a bit funny about it because i'd had a few friends who had complained that they have been too many weddings that felt like a conference room.

I'm struggling with a venue at the moment - it's on the road side but has the options to get married outside in it's lovely gardens. You can't see the road but you can certainly hear it - Has anyone disregarded a venue due to noise?

Will you hear it on the day, I have worked at venues that are very close to busy roads and never really noticed the traffic.

My irrational venue rule was no dead people on the walls. You know what I mean, those old fashioned country houses or castles with old portraits of random people on the wall. I'm sure I could have removed them or covered them up but I discounted any venues with these kind of photographs on the walls!

I went to see a venue locally which was stunning from the outside, the ceremony room, which they showed me first, was also stunning but the reception room was about the same size as my living room. I asked about having a marquee outside instead, and they said that would be fine, but they would shut the venue and so I would also have to hire toilets and electricity generators as well as get extra insurance! They also said I would have to go with one of their preferred caterers from a choice of two. Both extortionate.

I loved it, but no, I hate portaloos with a passion. It just couldn't happen.
