[bawl] my little brother is going to Oz

AnnaBanana, 29 August, 2008 at 19:54 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

?

ok he is 23 and he is going with his girlfriend, but he's never been so far away from home!! They have booked flights leaving in 2 weeks to Melbourne, return is for March!! I am terribly overprotective of him and I am happy for him, but still a bit sad. They are going to go and find work so they can stay as long as possible so if anyone knows anything about Melbourne, any ideas are appreciated. I know loads of recent graduates do this, but he's my baby ?

he'll be fine won't he. But what about all the poisonous spiders/snakes?! ?

Gah, my 24 year old baby sister has been over there since January on her own! (has made friends over there though) She's due back next January but I don't think she wants to come back.

It is so weird. I'm very close to my l'il sis so miss her terribly. It'll fly promise and they'll have a wonderful time.

They'll have a fabulous time and come back with lots of wonderful experiences and tales to tell you. It's going to zoom past I promise and before you know it they'll be home.

I bet he'll miss you too just a tiny bit if that's any comfort.

Aw he will be fine. And he will love it!

My brother did the same at the same age, him and his girlfriend left in the August and returned the day I had my little girl on May 31st the following year. They were s'posed to stay there a year.

They loved it. He was doing a Masters Degree and his girlfriend had part-time work. They lived in Perth though so can't help re: Melbourne. Just wanted to let you know he will be fine.

Thanks everyone. Love the tag Dooby ?

We are a very close family and even though he went to Uni in Newcastle and I live in South West, he came to visit every few weeks, and we spoke on the phone a lot. I know with Skype, MSN and such its easy to communicate....but i just want to...protect him! My mum says he has two mums, her and me ?

They will indeed have a fantabulous time...

I did 5 years ago and cant wait till I get back (though I have to persuade H its a good idea, hes always preferred the idea of NZ rather than Oz)

I had a payg mobile over there (was there 9 months) and it actually worked out cheaper to use that to ring home than a phone card Id bought here, cant remember the network - it might have been vodafone but there are quite a few

Not sure about work in Melbourne as my base was Sydney but Travellers contact point was a godsend, there is one in Melbourne, I found a few jobs through them and they also had a post box system, came in very useful for getting bank account and tax number as they were a bit funny about using hostels addresses..

Global gossip was also really helpful

Melbourne is not that scary honestly!

We have lived here 8 years and the only spiders I have seen have been a huntsman (big and hairy but not deadly) in the country, and a whitetail (little and very painful) in our old house. Never seen a snake in the city, and I used to walk every day in a nature reserve....but you just stomp and they slither away!

Melb is a fab place to live- loads to do, and we even have some culture (theatres, music venues, restaurants galore, festivals galore). They will have a ball.
