Beauty counters - advice please!

psycho_jo, 13 August, 2012 at 13:36 Posted on Planning 0 6

Not a massive make up wearer but do like Benefit stuff. Always a bit intimidated by the make up ladies in department stores but would like to go and have a 'make-over' with view to purchasing some lip-gloss and maybe mascara. I am having my make up done on the day but she left me to get my own lip stuff plus I didn't like how she did my mascara so want to use my own. My mum also wants to buy some nice make up and is doing her own. Anyway, my question is do I just wander in to Boots/Debenhams/wherever and say do me a makeover please?! Is it free? Will I feel pressured into buying? Please fill me in on the etiquette here!!! Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jo,

I think different counters will have different "procedures" and it will depend on how busy they are at the time as to whether they'll want to do it there and then. I booked a Bobbi Brown one (which incidentially took 2 hours and was rubbish!) but when I have been to buy something at Chanel (foundation) they have offered to put a full face on for me. Might be best to phone up and ask to speak to the counter you are interested in. When I went they do try and pressure you a bit into buying but I just said that I wanted to see how it lasted throughout the day, which was true, and if it held up then I'd be back to buy.

PS: I've just sent you an email with a photo of something sparkly ;-)

    Lisa x

I'd make an appointment, best to be on the safe side. You probably will feel pressure to buy stuff, you just have to stand your ground if they don't have a product you are happy enough with to buy.

Also, don't tell them you are only considering buying lipstick and mascara if you want a full make over, otherwise they will probably only try those two items on you...

Hiya, I always wonder into my nearest boots and if i have time the girl on benefit will give me a make over / trial something new on me- sometimes i book (normally if they are having an event/promotion) but mostly just rock up! Have always found the benefit girls to be so friendly and its my first stop on payday lol! Oh and it has always been free and no pressure to buy- tho you will want to because everything is lovely! Good Luck x

I had one done by benefit at john lewis and the girl was really nice, was just wondering around waiting for my OH to come back from somewhere and ended up having one, I brought a few bits but didnt feel pressured really, plan to go back there this weekend and possibly get another one done if there is someone there and they are not to busy then take a list of things I like and get as many of them as birthday presents as I can then buy the rest myself.

I recently went to the Benefit counter at my local Debenhams and really enjoyed it! It was quite late (5pm) so i was offered to have just a base done and was welcome to come back for the full works when i wanted.

I too have always felt intimadated by the make up counters but am now really looking forward to going back!!

    Hi,

I recommend Bare Minerals. The ladies will do a trial on your mum and yourself and then list what they use so that you can gradually buy it or have bits for birthdays and christmas etc before the wedding. It looks natural and comes out beautifully in the photos. My daughter looked lovely in hers.

    Hope this helps

    Lynne
