Been attacked at work and police action

leni, 10 August, 2008 at 09:30 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Hi

on Thursday I was attacked from behind by a client, it was over a trival matter (not enough spaces on a trip). Anyway my company wanted me to inform the police , which I have and have to go into the station on Tuesday to make a statement. This obviously has lots repucutions on my work as I work with an ethnic community were trust has been built over 6 years. but I agree something needs to do be done.

Has anyone or is anyone familiar with what happens in an assult case or what happens next? I know he'll be arrested and questions but I'd have preferred a caution than it going to court!

In my experience, nothing. (I was assaulted by a psych patient). I was encouraged to report it but nothing happened once I gave a statement.

ETA the patient wasn't charged and I had to work on the same ward as her until she was discharged. Caring sharing NHS?

Not got any practical advice, but just wanted to say not to worry about the repercussions on your work. I can understand that trust built up is important but that has to go both ways - if you didn't report this then you would be leaving yourself open to be seen as a soft touch.

When I got mugged a a few years ago, I had to go to the police station to make a statement, and it was very straightforward - I just described exactly what happened, giving every detail that I could recall, and they thanked me and said they'd be in touch.

As it happens, they caught the guy the next day - absolutely red-handed, as he tried to dispose of my wallet and travelcard as soon as he realised the police were onto him - and so I was told that I might need to appear in court as a witness.

But I never heard anything from them again, and so I assume he must have pleaded guilty (it was a bit open and shut!). As muggings go, it was pretty mild - no injuries aside from mild bruising, as I'd been wrestled to the ground from behind and my pockets rifled - and I got everything back, so I wasn't especially bothered about what happened after that.

Just wanted the same as others really, it deff should be reported but im sure it wont have a detromental affect on your work, esp as usually with these scenarios no further action will be taken, it'll prob just we a warning. unless the person has previous for similar offences. as harsh as it is, the police will deem this very low on their list of priorities, and try their hardest to 'no further action' the offence.

    hope you are ok though

The same thing happened to my Mother. She changed careers not long afterwards.

I was sexually assaulted coming home one night last year.

Although it was v. upsetting I have done everything I can to help the police to prevent this guy from doing it again.

Although your situation is different - and i completely understand the difficulties when you have built up trust with people - I still feel you should go the police so that this person understands that this kind of behaviour is NOT acceptable, and not a way to work with people - after all we have left the kindergarten now.

I think it only goes to court if you want to press charges and depending on the seriousness of the assault/injuries sustained. But just going to the police and them questioning him might be enough to ensure he does not act like this again.

It is a sensitive situation and you just have to go with how you feel to minimise any more upset or stress to you

    Hope that helps.

Just wanted to say Hi leni, and hope you're feeling ok. I'm with the others - you are a person too and need to report assualts like anyone else would. Perhaps you could speak to someone from that community to see what they say?
